The first week of school was over, it was Friday. Kirie was curled up in a ball in the corner of her room. Her knees were pressed up against her chest doing some late night thinking.
"What can I do. NOTHING," She thought. "There's no escape out of here. I always thought about running away but I never have enough guts to it....or do I?"
Kirie got to her feet and grabbed her ,slightly torn, backpack and emptied it out as quiet as she can. Then she got her few clothes that she owned and stuffed them in there.
Then she opened the lose floor board and uncovered a pocket size picture of her mom and her,it was the last picture left of her mom, a pocket watch, and a couple of books. Uncle Andy never let her have nice things, so she had to hide them.
The pocket watch belonged to her mother. Her mom was always old school but Kirie's liked that. "There's only one thing more precious than our time and that's who we spent it on," She'll always say right before she closed the watch.
She checked the time, 12:30, then put the watch in her pocket and the picture in the the other. Then she picked up a book, a survival book.
She thought about and she's going to live in the woods. So she needed the book to learn how to do so. Truth be told she didn't know how to do anything that didn't teach her in a book.
Kirie got the stolen library book and stuffed it in her bag. "Should I get some food?," she thought. "Nah, Uncle Andy will hear me. Better safe than sorry."
She opened her window and climbed on top of the roof.
As quiet as she can, she climbed down the roof. She wasted no time getting away. "The sooner the better,"she thought.
As soon as she was a couple feet in the woods, she ran. Ran out of excitement and happiness. She had so much excitement in her she had to let it out. "WHOO-HOO!",She shouted and jumped in the air.
But she quickly ran out of energy. She stopped to catch her breath. She looked around after. She saw nothing but trees, leaves, and bushes, but she was in love with it. She grinned and continued to look around.
From the distance she seen a river. "Cool a river. I could get fresh water. But first I need a fire"
Kirie set down her backpack and gets out her book and searches for the page on how to make a fire. "Here it is!" She had finally found the page. She read the materials that she will need and gathered them, and tried to make a fire. After her fithteen try, she finally successed.
Kirie had seen a red light, excitement filled her. She went on her hands and knees to blow on the red light and in a little while it turned to a blazing fire.
"Yes!!" She had jumped up off of the ground. Kirie looked at the fire with pride. Her smile was slowly going away when she felt a rain drop...then another.. then another. "Please just be my imagination, please!"
Sadly it wasn't just her imagination. Rain was poring in a matter of seconds. Her once blazing fire was now washed away from the rain and her once prideful smile was now a disappointment frown.
"Great," she thought bitterly. "Now time to find shelter. My book!!" She quickly grabbed the book from the ground and put it in her bag before it got more wet.
She put her backpack on her back and walked away from the river. From the distance she seen a cave. "Yes!," She whispered and ran to the cave.
Kirie stopped in front of it and was about to go in when a pack of wolves came out. She was paralyzed with fear. Wide eyed Kirie walked back slowly while the wolves growled.
She tried to slowly backed away but they had her surrounded. "So this is it. I can't believe I was so stupid to runway. What was I thinking?," she thought.
The wolves started to bark and slowly inclosed on her. "Now I'm going to die because I was so stupid and careless. At least I'll be with my mom...."
Just then a girl with a leather jacket and brown eyes and hair came out of the cave, she looked familiar but Kirie couldn't put her finger on it.
"What's going on?" The girl sounded as if she just woke up, she was even rubbing her eyes. The girl looked at Kirie, and Kirie recognized her instantly...Maddy.
"Nana what are you doing to her?," Maddy asked. "Just go back inside. She was trespassing. She could be dangerous, she could have hurt you," Nana had said.
Kirie was bewildered. "Is she talking to them....", she thought.
"Nana she's not dangerous, she's my friend." Maddy walked in inside the circle so she was standing right besides Kirie. Kirie smiled at the word friend. "So she is my first friend...to bad I'm going to die before I would actually get to know her better."
To Kirie's surprise, they went back in the cave. She was confused but yet glad she could now live another day. "C'mon let's go inside," Maddy said. "Your soaked! Hopefully you won't get sick." "Is this is the first time who cared about my health in a long time," Kirie thought.
They went into the cave. Kirie saw the wolves staring but as long as if she was with Maddy, she felt safe. Kirie followed Maddy into the cave and they stopped and sat down not to far from the entrance.
The cave was dark but the moonlight was barley shimmering in so they could make out faces and the difference between a wolf and a rock. "I'm supposed to sleep with my pack," Maddy had said and before she could get up, Kirie grabbed her hand.
"Please stay, I'm scared." This was the first time since her mom's death that she actually told someone her true feelings.
Maddy thought about it." Yeah I should probably stay with her. She's probably scared to death seeing all these wolves. I doubt she seen a person talk to them either," she thought.
Maddy nodded and sat back on the ground. She reached back of a rock and pulled out a blanket. "Here so you don't get cold. I hardly use it. Sleeping with a pack of furry animals gets warm." Maddy gave Kirie the blanket and she took it.
"Thanks." Kirie rapped the blanket around her small body and lied down, Maddy lied next to her.
Kirie was great full to have Maddy with her, but she was curious. "So you live here in this cave?" Maddy nodded. "How do you get clothes, blankets, and stuff like that?" "I go into town." Maddy had replied.
"But don't you have to pay for those things?" "Yes, I work sometimes. But it's hard finding work when you're so young."
"So then what do you do when you have no money." Kirie had asked but it seemed that she already knew the answer. "I steal."
"But stealing is bad." "So? I need it." "Don't you feel guilt?" "Nah. I'm used to the feeling, doesn't bother me anymore. And I can't just live in the past. I got to keep moving forward. And I don't steal unless I need it badly."
Kirie liked the way she looked at life but she didn't really like the stealing part, but there was something else on her mind.
"What was that outside? It was like you were talking to them and how do you live in their pack with getting killed?"
"I lived with them ever since I was five, a lady took me to them and they been taking care of me ever since. The lady could speak to them and I think she gave me the ability to speak to them too. She didn't really explain it, but I can speak to more than just wolves. I could speak to dogs too since they're related."
"But why did the lady take you here? Couldn't you live with you're parents?" "My dad's dead and I don't know wear my mom is. This jacket is the only think I have left of her."
"Oh I'm sorry. My mom's dead and I don't know wear my dad is either. I lived with my Uncle Andy until I ran away tonight. I don't like him. He always...." Kirie stopped herself. She couldn't tell her friend that she get hit. She's not supposed to tell anyone, but for some reason she did.
"He always hits me." "Well he won't now. I'll protect you. No one will hurt my first friend." Maddy blushed. She never meant to tell her that she was her first friend. She thought Kirie would call her pathetic for not having any friends.
"I thought you have friends?" They aren't my real friends, you're my first true friend." Maddy looked away from Kirie. "You're my first real friend too." Maddy looked at Kirie again and smiled.
"Now c'mon let's get some sleep, I'm tired."
And so the two new friends slept not knowing what will await them in the morning.
