I have never met anyone as stubborn as Dinger was. I would try and help him, but he would either ignore me, or insist that he could do it on his own.

He was really struggling with these simple fractions. I didn't understand how someone could think the fractions are hard. I guess I wouldn't understand because I've never struggled over anything in any subject. I was always one of the first people to get it. I guess not everyone was like me in that way.

The hour seemed to go on and on. I had found a book to read while Dinger sat there quietly, finishing his homework.

"Are you sure you don't want any help?" I asked, looking up from my book.

He sighed, this time long and dramatically, "I've said this a million times, and this better be the last time I say it, no, I don't need any help," he said through his gritted teeth.

I shyly backed off, returning to my book. I was reading a book about a guy, Ray Garraty, who was chosen to participate in a Long Walk. He had to out-walk all the other Walkers in order to win the big cash prize. If you did anything against the rules, the soldiers who patrolled and watched the Walkers would give you a warning. If you got three warnings, you'd get shot.

It was pretty horrific, the thought that people would do that, it disgusts me. Although, I had to admit, it was a pretty good book. I couldn't take my eyes off of it. The only time I took my eyes off the book was the occasional glance at Dinger.

Suddenly, Dinger stood up and started closing his books. He picked up his books and without giving me a second look, said "I'm done," and walked out.

I quickly got up and put my book away back on the shelf after checking what page I was on and remembering it. I grabbed my things and hurried out after him.

I got into the hallway and looked around for him but he was no where in sight. He couldn't have gone too far away in the little time he left before I came out after him. There were so many hallways he could have gone down.

I decided to shrug him off and just go home. I didn't tell my mom I was staying an hour after school so I was probably in a lot of trouble by now. I can guarantee she's worried sick about me.

I walked to my locker and put away my extra books I didn't need then closed it and started down the hall to the school doors. I walked out into the cold breeze and zipped up my sweater. I wish I would've worn a jacket, it was so nice this morning, I thought it would be nice all day.

I walked down the steps, slinging my bag over my shoulder and turning the corner to go down the street. My house was about twenty minutes away, not very far. I was about ten minutes into my walk when I looked behind me and saw a group of guys following me.

I started speeding up my pace to a speed walk, but they could tell I was starting to walk faster because they did the same. I was getting really nervous when I started sprinting down the street, shaking from fear. They started running after me, yelling at me.

"Hey, babe, stop running," they yelled, but I didn't stop. I ran until I turned into an alley. The same alley Dinger had disappeared in the first day I saw him at the street dance.

I looked back at the opening of the alley and sped up but then fell down when I bumped into something.

"Hey, watch it!" the voice yelled and turned around, looking down at me. I looked up and saw that it was Dinger. "Aw, shit, you again?" he groaned, then snapped his head up when he saw the group of guys who had been chasing me enter the alley.
