"You're lovely little dangerous, you make my blood run cold,
In my head, your pleas are dead, your story left untold,
Take a step, please hold our breath, please stay away from me,
I won't pretend you matter now, my beautiful catastrophe."
- Bach's Revenge debut album, track 1
Tally reached into the freezer to retrieve another tub of Cherry Garcia ice cream while Charlie got two spoons. Tally's parents were out for the night and Charlie had invited herself over for the hundredth time in the last three weeks.
"You know," Tally said. "This pity party has to end soon. I've gained like five pounds of sympathy weight and I can't remember what Adam looks like."
Charlie rolled her eyes. "I told you to stop worrying about me. You can go out with your boyfriend, I'm not stopping you."
Tally headed to her bedroom and flopped on the bed dramatically. "I may not be your best friend, but you're mine and what I'm about to say, I say with love and the best intentions, okay?"
Charlie, not entirely too sure if she wanted to hear what Talia had to say, nodded.
"You look like shit," Tally said and smiled. "Phew, that wasn't as hard as I thought."
"Well thanks," Charlie replied.
Tally pointed her finger, her giant cubic zirconium catching the light from the candles sending rainbows through the room. "I said it was with the best intentions."
Charlie softened. "I know. You're right. It's the truth."
"Only thing that leaves my lips," Tally said. "So what, barista boy dumped you. You need to get over it."
Mitch dumping her was only part of the problem. The other part, the bigger part was Sebastian. She couldn't stop thinking about him and wondered if he did the same. He'd stopped calling by the third day, he'd given up on her. She couldn't blame him at least for that. She'd given up on him without bothering to even listen to an explanation. Not that he could explain himself away, but she hadn't even let him try.
"Look at the bright side," Tally said, "The Valentine's Day dance is coming up, prime hunting ground for a new boyfriend."
Charlie didn't want a new boyfriend, or an old boyfriend. They meant the same thing to her. Heartbreak. "I'm not going," she mumbled.
Tally spooned some Cherry Garcia into her mouth before responding. "Shut up!"
"Why the hell would I go, Tally? Honestly. Mitch won't even look at me, McKenzie has spent the last three weeks reminding me she's Sebastian's bed buddy, and I'm a total social outcast."
"No," Tally objected. "You will be a total social outcast if you don't go. It's a sign of weakness that you can't face people. You're giving them exactly what they want, Charlie."
"I don't want to see Sebastian," she answered.
"Right, well are you planning to drop out?"
Charlie rolled her eyes. "Nope."
"Well you can't hide forever. You don't need to talk to him if you don't want to. Just make an appearance. Save face."
Charlie didn't say anything.
Tally waved her spoon. "You know it's true! If you at least show up and pretend not to give a shit, it will make surviving the rest of the school year almost doable."
