"Don't turn around to see the past,
Keep it locked away,
Face the future with bright eyes,
Hear the words I say." - Bach's Revenge debut album, track 2
Charlie smoothed her hair down and looked at Tally. "Are you sure I look okay?"
Tally licked her finger and touched Charlie's shoulder, making a hiss sound when she made contact. "You're so smoking hot right now, Sebastian and Mitch are definitely going to realize the error of their ways."
She didn't necessarily want either to realize the error of their ways. Truth was, the only thing she wanted was for the pain in her chest to stop, the fogginess in her brain to clear, and the never-ending well of tears in her eyes to cease. She wasn't too optimistic that it could happen. "Sebastian claimed he had already realized the error of his ways."
"Like hell he did," Tally argued. "To you anyway, you wouldn't let him get a word in edgewise."
"That's beside the point."
"It's not beside the point at all. He called Adam like a thousand times, begging for him to talk to you on Sebastian's behalf."
Charlie rolled her eyes. "Right. To tell me how much of a mistake McKenzie was."
"That girl would open her legs for anyone, Charlie. Sebastian saw her as an opportunity to numb the pain he felt. Guys are like that. I'm not trying to justify it, but it's true."
"I know," Charlie admitted. "Doesn't make it suck any less."
"Listen," Tally said. "Just go to the dance. I swear, you will feel like you've climbed a mountain facing both of them. The sooner you have it conquered, the sooner you can move on."
She'd taken Tally's advice to go. She didn't want to face Sebastian or Mitch, but she needed to do both to salvage what was left of her pride. It was an end to a chapter in her life she'd much rather forget. She sought after the elusive "closure" damaged people talked about all the time.
Tally whipped her ravenous raspberry lip-gloss out of her pocket and began applying it with precision and speed. She smacked her lips together and turned. "So, you know how we were talking about fund-raising at the last social committee meeting?"
"Yep," Charlie said. "I remember."
"Lilah and I came up with the perfect thing."
Charlie stood beside her friend, adjusting and readjusting her strapless top. "Which is?"
"We thought we'd auction of dances with each of the boys. We auction them off one by one, highest bidder for each wins a dance."
Sebastian still wasn't on Charlie's list of things to be happy about, but she had to give credit where credit was due. "Tal, that's freakin brilliant."
"I know, right?"
"Honestly, that could get the school a lot of money."
Tally popped her lips a second time for good measure. "I never cease to amaze even myself."
As they headed to the school, Charlie couldn't help but wonder who would bid for Sebastian's affections since McKenzie already had them for free.
Four weeks ago, Sebastian was in Los Angeles changing his life. Now, he stood outside the school with his hands shoved into his pockets wondering how hard it would be to walk away and never look back. But he didn't have the guts, there was no way he could follow through with trading his old life in return for a new one.
