Chapter Thirteen

Lukas and Jason were helping Sophia set things up for their planned call. She continuously glanced at the clock, looking to see how much time they had before the call was supposed to come in. Two hours. Somehow, that didn’t feel like enough time.

Getting the equipment set up for the video call was simple enough, and that much, Sophia wasn’t worried about. Instead, she was worried about Gabriel. He had been sitting quietly on the couch the entire day, not saying a single word to anyone, and Sophia wondered if she was going too far.

“Gabriel,” she said, walking over to him and speaking softly. “You’re going to be fine, I promise.”

He looked at her, but he didn’t say anything in response. She put a hand on his shoulder, hoping it would help comfort him, but she had the feeling she might just make things worse. With a sigh, she removed her hand and then started to walk away. She hated to see him so sad and scared, but she had to resist the urge to pull him into her arms and kiss him and make him relax that way.

While she knew it might not help him relax, that thought did give her an idea. She couldn’t go through with the thought that crept into her mind, but she could make a promise. Turning around, she walked back over to Gabriel’s side. She leaned close to him and whispered in his ear, telling him exactly what she wanted to do to him later.

She smiled at the surprised look on his face, knowing she had succeeded in getting his mind off of what was about to happen, at least temporarily. Very quickly, she put her hand on his upper thigh and then lightly touched him through his pants. Then, abruptly, she left. She loved the confused look on his face and she knew that if she stayed there any longer, she wouldn’t be able to resist dragging him upstairs.

“How’s it coming?” Sophia asked, returning her attention to Lukas and Jason. As far as she could tell, they were mostly finished setting things up. They had a TV connected to her computer and she  could see her desktop on it.

“We just have to test it,” Jason said.

“Which I think we should do now,” Lukas said, looking towards the door.

Sophia had heard the front door open, although she had ignored it. But with Lukas acting a bit strange, she sniffed the air, identifying the new person. Knowing the sort of unpleasantness that was to come, she was tempted to run out quickly, but she knew she had to address the problem sooner or later. Especially if she really wanted to keep Gabriel around.

“Hey Uncle Dan,” Lukas said. “Jason and I were just leaving. See you Sophia.”

With that, Lukas and Jason took off quickly, leaving Sophia to face her father alone. Gabriel was still there, but he once again seemed lost in his own thoughts, and Sophia would be surprised if he was even aware of the new wolf in the room.

“Make it quick, dad,” Sophia said. “I’ve got a lot to do today.”

“You’re always so busy,” Dan said. “Don’t you ever take time to just sit back and relax?”

“Yes,” she said without going into any further detail. “If you’re just here to chat, we’ll have to do it another time. Like I said, I’ve got things I have to take care of.”
