That face stared back at him, cold, blank, expressionless. Percy tilted his head at his reflection curiously. The girl opposite him laid her hand on the glass screen that separated them from the other, fingers splayed.
Percy held back a nervous grimace and forced his face to form his usual, cheerful smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. A smile that held hope, a childish optimism when faced with the world. A smile that almost nobody knew, was so painfully fake.
Almost.
"What do you see?"
Monica looked like she was trying not to stare at her own soulmate in the mirror. And resorted to tracing invisible patterns into the soft blue silk of her shawl. Her dark eyes flickered to his face, and Percy knew she was reading his expression.
Sometimes, he really hated his sister's unique ability to read people. Of course, he didn't always feel that way. More often than not, her talent came in handy, as much as he despised admitting it.
Percy but his lip, and it suddenly occurred to him just how vulnerable he must seem. His surprise was short-lived, because his own mouth opened and he stared as the words formed, his voice betraying him.
"She looks familiar."
The sound of his voice cut through the suffocating silence and echoed throughout the dark room, and Percy shivered, his eyes drifting to meet his sister's darker ones. He wasn't really sure what he expected, and he wasn't sure if he should've been disappointed when the shock surfaced in his sister's dark blue eyes.
Monica only smiled, her gaze softening. Her voice was quiet and tears bubbled over in her royal blue eyes as she spoke the words, "Mine must be invisible, then...I've never seen their face."

These days Monica felt more like a part of him than a sister. Days when they unconsciously copied the others words and movements. Days when he remembered she was the only one he knew for certain would always be there for him.
It was on one of these days when he realized something: he might never see his soulmate. Of course, being completely cut off from the world had major downsides--but, in total isolation, any upsides were practically nonexistent.
Percy turned to his sister. "So you...you don't have a soulmate?" He internally cursed as his sister tensed up considerably. There was a curtain of unease hanging in the room like a wall between them, a layer of silence that thickened as the seconds passed.
"Percy."
Percy's head snapped up to see his sister. She was in tears, her eyes shut, hot trails of water leaking from them excessively. They seemed endless. And Percy couldn't help but stare at the mess his sister had been reduced to.
"Percy, remind me, how long have we been locked away in this tower?"

"Why would you do this to us?" Monica was shouting. Percy tried to shield her from Triton as he growled at them. Percy felt his heart beat in a jerky pattern, in tune with the yelling that filled the room and poured out the windows and into the garden.
Percy gave a yelp of surprise as Triton grabbed his wrist and started dragging them up the stairs. Monica was screaming. Percy was sobbing. Because they knew what he was going to do. He had promised he'd lock them away forever if he told their father.
Percy wished he could've just kept his mouth shut.
"Don't you understand? I have to do this."
Triton swung one of the doors open and tossed them inside carelessly.
Monica, next to him, stopped screaming, and furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. "Why? We didn't do anything..."
"I don't want this. I don't. But there can only be one heir to the throne. And your death? No. I suppose I am too kind-hearted for my own good."

"I'm afraid I've forgotten."

The next day was silent. Too silent.
Percy stared at his sister in a silent disbelief.
He wasn't sure how long he'd been here.
But the blood on the carpet had dried.
He tried to pretend it was just paint.
The note on the floor left him stunned.
'I have a soulmate. For some reason she looks just like yours.'
Percy didn't know he'd been crying until he touched the ribbon trail of tears that had traced it's way down his face without his acknowledgment of its existence.
'We shared a soulmate.
I want you to be happy.
So we don't anymore.'

Annabeth tilted her head at him. "Percy? Are you okay?"
Percy welcomed the familiar feeling of tears welling in his eyes, clouding his vision and shielding him from the world. He smiled bitterly.
"Just remembering something."
