Chapter Two
September 21, 2009
Sophomore Year
“Why is there even school,” Hailey complained leaning her face against the cold window of Kieran’s car.
“Because we need it,” I said casting her a look.
She rolled her eyes. “I hate this. For Math, we have calculators. Geography? That’s why we have maps. Spanish? There’s Dora. Music? The internet provides us YouTube. History? They’re all dead anyways,” she said throwing her hands up in the air. “So please enlighten me and tell me why is there still school.”
Kieran stifled a laugh as he pulled up into the parking lot of Covington High School. “Well now that you’ve finish your lecture, we are here.”
I pushed Hailey out the door and slammed the door behind me. Kieran grimaced. “Watch my baby, alright,” he said and softly patted his beat up mustang.
“And here I was wondering why people say boys are weird,” Hailey said crossing her arms. “Well it’s not like I didn’t know from the beginning.”
I smacked her arm and she flinched back in pain. “Ow, you totally killed my arm,” she whined. “Now I can’t write, so maybe I should head back home.”
“Head to class and you’ll be alright,” I said grabbing her arm.
“You’re such a pickle,” she said.
Kieran cracked up clutching to his stomach. “And here I thought why people say girls are weird,” he said repeating Hailey’s words.
“Do you want to die,” Hailey warned narrowing her eyes at him. “I’m the older one here. So please respect your elder.”
I smiled and turned to walk to the front door. Hailey was two years older than both Kieran and me. Technically, she should be a senior this year, but she was left back for one year due to family problems. When she was seven, her mother left her, abandoned her right on the street never coming back. Hailey never knew who her father was, so she was sent to an orphanage. But on her tenth birthday, the Kendrick family, my neighbors, adopted her. And from then on we became best friends.
I looked back as they continued arguing. Her long blond hair swung behind her as she caught up with me. “Well this dick here won’t shut up,” she said and stuck her tongue out at Kieran. He was about to open his mouth when I covered his mouth with my hand.
“You guys are acting like little kids,” I said.
“I’m a junior alright. I’m missing my time as little kid. You can’t blame me,” she said pulling her earphones into her ears. “Let the nightmare begin.” And with that she walked in into the school.
I was about to follow Hailey when Kieran grabbed my arms spinning me around to face him. “Yes,” I said.
He blinked studying my face.
