Chapter Five

Present Day

Senior Year

Buddha once said, “Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.” But how can I not dwell in the past when my life is coming to an end within three days. I can barely focus on walking in the street never mind the whole present thing.

I walked down the street aimlessly. It wasn’t like I hadn’t imagined her coming back, but I didn’t expect to feel like this: so lost and gone. I felt hallow as if someone had just ripped my soul away and now I was the shell—the ghost of myself.

Was this how it felt to be so forlorn? Did she felt like this?

I collapsed down onto the floor gasping for air. I was suffocating. Why did she have to come back? Hadn’t she done enough damage? My head dropped into my hands as a loud thunder clapped in the air.

Sophomore Year

“Oh My God, you are not going to believe this,” Hailey shrieked pointing at the horoscope of the Seventeen magazine. Her eyes bored into the paper and I swear a hole would have appeared if she stared at it longer. “It says that I’m going to meet the love of my life today.” She clapped her hands together and pulled it to the side of her face like a little kid dreaming of becoming Cinderella.

I rolled my eyes and etched closer to her. “It’s a total lie,” I said snatching the magazine away from her. My eyes slid down the zodiac until I came across cancer.

“You have a crush on one your friends and you are embarrassed to talk to them. But don’t worry he will talk to you and the relationship will become closer. Keep on being confident,” Hailey read and pouted her lips. “So you do have a crush.”

I elbowed her in the ribs. “Shut up. This whole horoscope thing is fake,” I said getting out of bed.

She narrowed her eyes and gave me her infamous smirk. “Come on baby tell me your little dirty secret,” she purred trying to be seductively. She placed a hand on my knee and slowly crept up my thigh. “Don’t keep those inscrutable secrets to yourself.”

I laughed pushing her back so she fell back to the bed. “You are so lame,” I said grabbing a nearby book. “Your seducing skill sucks. I feel like puking after witnessing the whole thing.” I opened the book and pretended to read, but she slapped her hand right on the page. “Really?”

“Well I guess I have to do it the hard way,” she said raising her hand and wiggled her fingers.

My eyes widened knowing what she was going to do. “NO,” I screamed. “You’re not going to do that.”

She laughed evilly as a thunder covered my screams of protest. Wrapping an arm around my waist, she threw down onto the bed and started tickling me on the side. “STOP,” I screamed trying to breath, but Hayes didn’t even hesitate on tickling me. I could feel my face burning as I shoved it into the covers. “PLEASE,” I begged prying her hands off.
