After the experience with Sophia, both of us felt better. We had her over a few more times, as apparently she enjoyed our company in return. In the last month, I had taken to reading pregnancy books. I would do anything to make sure the baby was alright. I wanted to feel more prepares, though I was not really. I wasn’t sure what to expect. April was due in three days, January 23rd, and I wasn’t even ready. I was a terrible mother. I knew I was a terrible mom. “Travis,” I started, but stopped when Travis came over and engulfed me in a hug. Slightly confused I said, “Why…”
“You looked like you needed a hug. Remember what you told me a long few months ago? Don’t stress. Everything will be fine.” I gave him a smile.
“I was going to ask what you wanted for dinner…”
“Oh, well you probably needed that anyway.”
“You’re right.”
“Well, I’ll take some spaghetti, if you’re able.”
“Yeah, that’s fine, but I’m going to need some help.” Dinner took longer to make than it normally did, but neither of us seemed to notice. After dinner, we turned in early and I peacefully drifted to sleep.
I awoke at 2:00 am and felt… different. There was a sharp pain, but it lasted only a few seconds. A few minutes later, it happened again. After the third time, I finally put two and two together. “TRAVIS! WAKE UP! NOW! I NEED TO GET TO THE HOSPITAL NOW!!!!”
“Wha?” Travis looked confused for a minute, then realization dawned on his face. “The baby?!?” At a nod from me, he jumped out of bed and hurriedly got dressed. We were out and in the car in a matter of minutes. We arrived at the hospital a few minutes later. Frantically, Travis ran up to the woman at the front desk. “My wife… she’s going… to have… a baby…” he said, out of breath.
The woman had someone lead us to a room and within a few minutes, the pain caught up with me. I screamed. I squeezed Travis’s hand. I did everything I could to make me feel better.
~3 hours later~
I let out a gasp of pain and another scream. Then, a baby’s cry cut through the room. My eyes were watering, half because of pain and half because of happiness. April was placed on my chest. April’s tiny little body lay wailing on top of me. I couldn’t have been happier. At last, I had my little April Grace Stoll.
