CHAPTER TEN
ESCAPE"So what are you?" They were still stuck inside this classroom. Nobody was willing to speak to each other apart from the two dunderheads that were discreetly speaking to one another in one corner, the trio that had been in the wrong place at the wrong time and the collection of three other girls who were now unsure as to whether or not they could still trust each other situated in other corners.
Leo and Katherine were talking amongst themselves near the teacher's desk, occasionally looking over at their sister to see whether there was any progression. And unsurprisingly ... there wasn't.
The fact that Sanah had so bluntly dropped the question with no intention of adding context was quite brave, Roman would've thought if she wasn't asking her the same question.
But she was curious to know what Autumn was in exchange for what Sanah was.
"I don't think I need to spell it out for you," Autumn replies. "My older brother is Derek Hale," she continues and the remaining clockwork had clicked into place. "You know what he is since Scott had said it aloud for everybody to hear, so it shouldn't take too long to understand what I am."
"Fair enough."
"What about you then?" Roman chimes in.
"Huh?"
"You," says Autumn. "What are you? You didn't ask when you saw me that night and you didn't question how Roman could open those doors without a key of some sort. Either you're just some weirdo who happens to know everything about us or you're something too."
Sanah felt hurt slightly. Being sensitive to name calling wasn't exactly something foreign to her - she's heard an assortment of names that people called the girl who wore black hoodies which covered her eyes or wouldn't speak in class. Hell, tonight was probably the first time that anybody had heard her voice clearly instead of the mumbling, complaining and groaning that she would often do whenever she was irritated, annoyed or simply agitated from something. Seeing her childhood and what her home life is like, it makes sense now.
Weirdo was just one of the many names that her sister's liked to call her. It was Aiko's favourite because it made her feel better about herself for being the only daughter in the house who considered herself too dark in complexion to be related to them. Similiarly, Kavya felt too light to think of herself belonging in the family. Sanah felt pity but not when they were harassing her and physically abusing her for something that isn't her fault. They call her the mistake because that's what they think of themselves.
But despite that, Sanah kept quiet. Maybe it triggered emotions she didn't want to feel. It was just something that she didn't enjoy hearing that often.
Roman did pick up on the tension but plays it off casually. "I mean, you don't need to answer that question. Us knowing just makes it easier for us to trust each other. Seeing as we all play on the same soccer team, we're all in the same Chemistry and History class and the fact that we shouldn't be arguing about something as silly as that."
"Sure," says Sanah, walking away towards the window.
That went great.
Twenty minutes had passed and in that time, Lydia had successfully managed to piss off the police station in a matter of five seconds, Roman had acquired the knowledge required to understand that in the time that she had known Stilinski, he has only been able to say one word in Spanish and Sanah was, quite frankly, bored. Whether it was because she had still found nothing else to do because she was so lost in the darkness that the nightime had to offer or perhaps it was the fact that these popular kids were already pissing her off. It was probably the latter guessing by her face.
