------------------------------------------ CHAPTER 9--------------------------------------------------------

The hug ended and all too quickly I was left standing stupidly in the centre of her bedroom, while she hastily locked the French windows.

The room was large and painted white with immaculate cream coloured carpets like the rest of the house. Lottie always said her parents need for minimalism made her feel like she lived in a hospital, and so had rebelled by sticking to her wall all the pictures and posters she could find. Her king size sleigh bed, still with blue sheets, dominated the room and on the floor lay her laptop and few discarded DVD's. A massive bright pink beanbag was up against the wall. My eyes were drawn to the canvas behind her bed, a picture of Lottie, Chloe, Grahame, Ollie, Fred and myself hanging out during last summer in the park, it made me feel overly emotional. I heard Lottie clearing her throat behind me and so I turned to look at her.

She was, as ever, the epitome of an English rose. Peaches and cream skin, with fair wispy hair that hung at her shoulders; her whole body was petite and she had dainty, pixie like features, although she stood at 5 foot 4. Her skin looked paler than usual when contrasted with her plain black tank top and pyjama shorts; and her green eyes were wide in anticipation.

'Phoebe' she began hesitantly 'is that you?' But before I could answer her the French doors behind her were being wrenched open- breaking the lock. In the doorway stood Arthur. Shit, I knew he would have followed me, but to effectively break into my friend's house was a different story. He looked windswept and angry, but so was I.

'Phoebe you shouldn't be here' Arthur began. Lottie turned to look at him, anger flaring in her eyes. Another quality that had made us firm friends; she may look sweet and innocent but she had a nasty temper.

'Go dark one' Lottie whispered her voice sounding more authoritative than I have ever heard it before, her gaze meeting Arthur's with indignation 'I will not invite you into this house, nor are you welcome on this property'. His eyes flashed with surprise and he jumped from the balcony, not without shooting a glance at me, which told me he would be waiting just outside the boundaries.

'AH SHIT, mums gonna go mental when she sees this' Lottie muttered for my benefit while closing the sliding door and once again turning to look at me. I couldn't help but smile at her.

'What the hell did you just do?!' I exclaimed. 'You know, I don't care... that was awesome!' I began moving towards her ready for the babble of excitement that was surely building up in her. But she took a half step back away from me, fear growing in her eyes.

'So it's true then?' Lottie said quietly 'This guy talked to me after school today, told me you were alive and then loads of shit about...' her voice croaked over the word 'vampires'.

'Yeah, I guess it's true' I said equally quietly. Fear of rejection washed over me, what if my best friend was afraid of me? What if she wanted me out of the house aswell? 'But it's still me Lots' I added. She looked at me for an excruciatingly long time, into my eyes and down my body. I heard her exhale strongly and the fear in her eyes was replaced with something else...joy?

'That is so fucking cool!' she said, her face cracking into the familiar smile that I had missed.

I smiled back as she rushed forward to hug me again, then grabbing my hand and leading me to sit on the bed while she remained standing, shifting her weight between her feet excitedly.
