“beautiful life”

I stood in line with many other souls in this gray endless void. one by one they stepped through the door as the bird-like figure sat on the doors edge, watching them go by. As my turn came I stepped to the side and noticed a lone stool which I sat upon and joined the bird in the viewing. eventually, the last soul walked through the door and the murmurs and whispers died off. “Well then, what of you?” the bird said. I looked at the door. Every time it opened a bright light flashed through, making it impossible to see through it.

“what lies beyond the door?” I asked.

“eternal happiness. you've died sir, it's time to move on.” The bird responded. Those words made my life flash before my eyes. The bird perched itself on my hat. “Are you ready?” It asked. “I'm not sure” I said. “If I had known life was so short, I'd have cherished each moment of it.”

“It's too late now. You must go through the door.” The bird said. A moment of silence passed and I began to tell bird story after story from my life, savoring every word. an endless amount of time passed and I told the bird my entire life story. It then made me an offer. “You could start over if you'd like.” I stood up and opened the door. “I used to think my life was just a series of pointless events but standing here in this wasteland, reminiscing that life I now realize how beautiful it was. Though that was the case, it is the past and I must move on. Please do tell others to appreciate it.”

Then the man passed through the door, and I perched myself back upon it's top. This is a story I tell all those preparing for their next life. The story of that man and his beautiful life.
