"Hailey! We're going to watch Jim's football game! Do you wanna come?" My mom yelled.
"Nah I'll stay here!" I yelled back. "Bye! Love you!"
"Love you!"
Nobody knew about Dumpling, so he stayed in my closet. When I was at School, Nasctavi and Oxplu fed him corn and carrots, and the occasional chocolate bar. I can't believe in just a few days, I turned from being totally horrified of Nasctavi and Oxplu in my room, to wishing they were here all the time.
I wasn't sure if I was so fond of them because, well, they were my best friends as their human selves, or because they have done so much for me as ghosts. Actually, I never really thought of them as ghosts, I saw them as normal human beings. But I still couldn't believe Kevin and Bionca were going to die in a few years. It brought shivers down my spine. But what if I could prevent that? Oxplu said Kevin died from a cow kicking him too hard. And. . . I couldn't think of anything else. I didn't know if Oxplu would mind if I tried to prevent it, maybe I could call him over. Yeah, I'll do that.
I stood up from my bed and called out, "Oxplu,"
Before I knew a ghost of twenty-year-old Kevin was standing next to me. He looked at me with his white blank eyes, they were scary but filled with care and love and gentleness.
"Hey, Oxplu. . ." I said nervously, "Where was Kevin kicked by that cow? Was he at a farm?"
Oxplu sat down on the bed next to me and sighed, "No not quite. In the future, your parents bought you a pig and your brother a cow for your seventeenth birthday. The cow was a boy so it turned out big and mean. Your brother named him Cal. Cal lived in your backyard since it was so big. three years later Cal was fully grown. Your brother was feeding him one day when Cal got angry for some odd reason and charged at him." He shook his head. "Why did you want to know?"
I bit my bottom lip and looked around the room to see if anyone was there. "I want to prevent it from ever happening." Oxplu nodded like he had heard this before.
"You can try, but I know what's done cannot be undone. I must go now, Hailey."
And with that, he vanished from sight. What's done cannot be undone, I repeated in my head. I flopped down on my bed looking up at the ceiling. Dumpling jumped up on my chest and licked my nose.
I wondered if I had a ghost right now. Oxplu and Nasctavi must be from the future or Kevin wouldn't be alive, nor Bionca. How long would I live? Maybe I would die early too. And if so, did Oxplu and Nasctavi know about my ghost? Were they hiding it from me because they didn't want me to be scared that I was going to die early? Or maybe I was to live a normal life. These questions rushed through my head, I hadn't known how long it had been nor did I care. But a quick glance at the clock told me that I had been laying there for at least an hour, at the least. I heard my door squeak open and heard footsteps. Everyone was already home? It hadn't been that long. At least, I didn't think so.
"We're home Hailey! I brought Chinese food for dinner!" My mom called to me. I rushed downstairs and ate some orange chicken, noodles, and a fortune cookie. I opened my fortune cookie and ate it. I held the piece of paper in the hand and read it. This is what it said.
Hailey, we have to speak with you. Meet us in the park on Haffy st. at midnight tomorrow.
