I was sketching in the new sketchbook that I have just recently bought, making sure to shade the distinct parts of the willow tree correctly, when a rough hand suddenly snatched it away. I rolled my eyes at the perpetrator, glaring at him as I frowned.
"Give it back to me," I demanded, my hand extending outward. He replied with a simply scoff and chucked my sketchbook across my room, and into one of my old boxes, before standing back up. "Good morning to you too, I wanted to let you know that breakfast's ready. And we're heading on out, so hurry up."
My stepfather had always been a bit of a rear-end when it came to things like this, and how I spent most of my free time. In all honesty, I never exactly liked it. It seemed to be that he thought of my mother rather fondly (which disgusted me), and less on her daughter. He seemed to have the mentality of wanting a strong, brute son...
My mother had always disregarded the snarky comments we'd exchange each other sometimes, but I knew his wasn't exactly happy with me. Maybe it was because I wasn't dead-set on doing sports in college, or going pro. I had always done sports as a way to pass the time, but I had never been serious about it. To me, my academics mattered much more, and they both saw that, but my dad seemed more geared towards me becoming someone fit and known.
It didn't necessarily matter to me since I was almost done with my high-school and teenage years. Within the span of a few, short years, I'd be long gone.
I groaned as I slowly stood up, cracking my back before making my way towards the other side of the room, where my sketchbook was. Picking up the last few boxes carefully, I made my way down the stairs and rested them on the countertop, stealing an apple from the bowl.
You see, my mother and I were planned to go to South Korea in a few short moments. My grandmother had recently become more ill, and that I'd be best for both of us to visit her and watch after her until everything had settled down again.
I was excited to her again, after so many years. I knew that my grandmother had enjoyed the company of us, and staying longer could help. My stepfather wasn't coming with us, due to his job, but reasoned that he'd buy a ticket to visit when he was available.
Discarding the apple core into the disposable, I grabbed a few objects within the boxes and shoved them into my suitcase, leaving the boxes where they were as I left the house.
"Say goodbye to Phil, (Y/N)!" My mother had screamed, making me freeze in my place. I loaded my suitcase into the car before making my way over to him, crinkling my eye as I waved awkwardly.
"Goodbye." He nodded, doing the same, before turning his attention back to my mother and talking once more. I returned to the car and placed myself into the passenger seat, hearing the click of the seatbelt as I relaxed.
I don't think I'll be necessarily homesick, besides the fact that some of the teachers here were comforting, and helpful along the way. As for friends... I wasn't really good at keeping any. I had made some, but in the end, I knew that I'd probably return in no time as my grandmother recovered...

"Wake up, (Y/N). We're here," I heard a voice call out, shaking me awake as I stirred. Opening my eyes and rubbing the sleep from them, I saw my mother grinning, and noticed a good amount of passengers had already exited the plane.
Since when did we land?
"Hurry up, (Y/N)!" She beckoned, grabbing her carry-on as she walked away. I followed suit, welcomed by my aunty who stayed just out of the building, greeting us warmly. As we entered her car, I shivered, noticing the immediate temperature drop in her car.
As the drive pressed on, my aunty had begun her nosy interrogation, questioning my grades and how I had been doing... and then of course, if I had a boyfriend. To which I immediately retorted with a no, earning a great laugh from her as she pestered on.
"All right, we're here. Out," she smiled, though her tone of voice was the complete opposite of joyful. I made my way out of the car and towards the back, staring at the path leading to my new house. It was aesthetically pleasing, though a bit large for just me and my mother.
Yes, we were relatively comfortable in our living, but I much preferred not to have attracted much attention. As we headed inside, I had picked my room on the second floor, dropping my belongings and helping my mother with hers.
Once we were settled in, my mother began to cook as I helped her, laughing though we knew the stress levels were about to hit their peak soon. She began to hum to herself a bit, as she rinsed off all of the produce my aunty had bought, and I paused my moments.
"What made you so happy all of a sudden?" I had asked, watching as her smile brightened as she shrugged her shoulders.
"Oh nothing, really. Maybe it just had to with the fact that you're starting school here so soon..."
Oh no...
