Alexander's POV

I was still facing the wall when I woke up. It was getting brighter, so it must've been about five or six. I didn't yawn, I didn't stretch, I just got up and walked around, trying to make myself tired again. When that didn't work, I took to the hallway with my laptop as a way to ensure that my new roommate could still sleep. I typed for about thirty minutes before I heard footsteps. I got up quickly and walked back into the room only to see John snooping around the room.
"Hey, what're you doing up so early? And snooping around, nonetheless?" I asked. John jumped at the sound of my voice.
"Oh, thank god. I woke up and you weren't in your bed, so I started searching the room for you. Where'd you go?" John asked me. I told him that I'd gone out into the hallway to type so that I wouldn't disturb him, and he just sighed and shook his head at me. John asked me if I could make breakfast, and I happily obliged. John seems like a really nice guy, but I have to worry about those friends of his. I just don't know how they'll react to me.
After a couple more hours of sitting in our dorm, both of our alarms went off. John got up and suddenly, I realized how bad this could be for both of us. People would probably hate him for being friends with me, he'd get dragged into this war. I don't want that. I had to do something, fast.

John's POV

I was about to head out the door when Alexander jumped in front of it.
"Um, Alexander? What's the big idea? I have to go to class. So do you. Can't you hear everyone outside? They're heading to their classes, too. Now mo-" I was about to move him when he grabbed my shoulder. He looked deep into my eyes and I looked deep into his. I'd never noticed it before just now, but they seemed so sad. Broken, even.
"John, just... no matter what happens when we open this door, I need you to stay far behind me. I need you to pretend like you don't know me. Blend in with everyone else, do what they do. I know this sounds stupid right now, but I need you to trust me. Can you do what I've asked?" Alexander pleaded. He looked almost scared, I couldn't disobey him.
"Alright, Alexander, I'll do it," I responded, giving in to his desires.
"Good. Thank you." Alexander sighed in relief. He opened the door and I hung back for about five minutes, then went out into the hallway. I looked down in the direction of where Alexander went and what I saw was something I could never unsee. He was getting shot with spitballs, getting wads of paper thrown at him, everyone was pressed against the lockers, trying to get as far away from him as possible. I was about to get over there when I heard a gasp from behind me.
"What's going on, Mon ami?" Asked Lafayette who was looking at Alexander. Herc was close behind him.
"It's... my roommate. He's just... taking it." I murmured just loud enough for them to hear. We all just stared at each other until we heard a loud clatter. Almost as if our heads were being pulled by strings, we snapped toward where the noise had come from. I knew my life would never be the same after what I saw.

Alexander's POV

*clatter* Down went everything I'd been holding, and this marks the third day in a row that this has happened.
"Hey, watch it! How does this benefit you!? Does it make you feel better about your own sad, miserable life!?" I hollered. I'd just gotten so fed up with all of these people pushing me around, it was time to take a stand. However, I began regretting it when I saw the look on the person's face. His cheeks were flushed with rage and his fists were clenched so tight at his sides they'd turned white and had begun to shake. I gulped and saw him rear his fist. I tried to move but wasn't fast enough and felt the full effect of his punch. It sent me to the ground with a thud and left my vision blurred. I was about to get up when a figure stood in front of me and punched my attacker in the jaw, which sent him back a few steps. He grabbed his jaw, about to throw a punch at whoever was helping me, but then he stopped. I looked around and that's when realization hit me. Everyone in the hall was gone, it was only him, me, two people that were now standing right behind me, and the person saving me (who I couldn't see because their face was in front of one of the lights). The person who had punched me earlier saw that he was outnumbered and quickly fled the situation. The person who had helped me turned around and helped me up.
"Laurens!?" I nearly shouted. Damn formalities.
"Uhh... Hamilton?" John questioned, seeming confused at my calling him Laurens instead of John. I didn't care about that, though. There was something much more important I needed to hear.
"What are you doing here!? I didn't need help! Do you have any idea what this means for you!?" I turned around, "And you!? I don't even know you, I'm pretty sure you're new here, and you just got yourselves involved in a war!" Everyone seemed shocked. I took a deep breath.
"Look, I know the action's exciting but jesus, think before you start fighting," I explained.
"Alright, explain," John demanded, placing his hands on his hips. I growled and clenched my fists.
"Alexander! Answers! NOW!" And that's when I lost it.

John's POV

"Alexander! Answers! NOW!" I shouted. I had to know what was going on, and I have to know now. Alexander was looking down at the ground. I was about to tell him to look at me when his head shot up. I didn't even know what to say. His eyes were glassy, he was angry as all hell, and he looked like he might explode. He grabbed the collar of my shirt and pulled me towards him.
"You know what!? YOU DON'T GET ANSWERS! DO YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY!? BECAUSE I'VE LIVED THIS LONG NOT TELLING ANYONE AND I'M FINE! NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT I. DON'T. WANT. YOU. INVOLVED!" He yelled in my face. He let go of my collar shortly after and stormed to his class. Lafayette and Hercules came closer to me.
"Wh-what just happened?" I asked them, rubbing the back of my neck where the collar had pressed in.
"I think... he had a breakdown," Hercules answered, staring in the direction Alexander went. Lafayette nodded in agreement. I have no idea what's going on but, whatever it is, I'm getting to the bottom of it. Now.
