I woke up feeling like someone had microwaved my brain and then wrapped it in tinfoil. I realized that I was lying down on a bed which had the softest mattress I've ever slept on. I tried to get up, but my body didn't want to get away from the bed. I mentally kicked myself and tried again. It worked. Yay. Whatever. I walked around the room, just to make sure my legs didn't fall asleep again.
I saw a door at the far end of the room. I tried opening it. Locked. "Okay", I thought, "let's try this again." I concentrated hard on the doorknob, staring at it and visualizing its inside. I imagined a key entering the keyhole and slowly turning it. A second later, I heard the softest click. It worked! I tried the door again and it swung open. Trying not to be amazed at myself, (which was pretty hard) I slowly walked through the dim-lit corridor. Keeping my eyes wide open, I kept walking. Strange. There didn't seem to be anyone around. Not one single person.
After about five long minutes, could see a bright light ahead. But I could also hear lots of people talking and milling around. Taking my chances, I kept walking and then I found myself in a long hall. There were people all around me. Talking, laughing and just overall enjoying themselves. However, the moment I entered the hall, everyone went silent. They kept staring at me and didn't say a word. "Um..hey", I tried to sound confident, but I could hear that my voice came out really shrill and tiny. Clearing my throat, I tried again. "Hey, I'm Jake Mason. I think I'm lost. Could anyone tell me where I am? Or at least, why I'm here?" More silence. Okay, this was getting awkward. Suddenly, I heard a door slam open in the distance. The crowd turned around to look at the incomer and quickly parted to make way. I let out an involuntary gasp. It was the masked man. He strode along the path the people made and then stopped, directly in front of me. "So. The sleeper finally wakes," he said.
"Well, you're the one who put me to sleep."
"True."
Once again, I don't know how, but I could sense that he was smiling. "Where's Amelia?", I asked, suddenly. "Oh, she's fine. She's just up ahead," He replied. He then turned to the people and said, "He's one of us."
Everyone broke into an applause and smiled."Shall we go and meet your friend?", he asked me.
"Yeah sure, why not", I muttered. He then motioned me to follow him and walked through the way he had come. I followed him, feeling myself go red, because everyone was smiling at me. There was a door which was ajar at the far end. He went through it and I followed.
Once I caught up with him, he said, "My name is Rapier, if you're wondering."
"Okay, but that's not really what I wanted to know", I said.
"Then what did you want to know?"
"First of all, I want to know all the important and necessary stuff. Like why am I here? Why did you put me and Amelia to sleep? Who are all these people?"
"Ah, yes, I shall tell you why you're here. You must have noticed that you have unusual powers, yes?"
"I'm not sure about 'powers', in plural. I can only move stuff with my mind. I'm pretty sure that that's the only power I have", I answered back.
Once again, I could sense him smiling. "The only power you have? Or the only power you have realized you have?" He looked at me and laughed at the expression on my face.
"No, young hero. You have many powers. All of us here are not normal humans. We are superhumans. We are different from everyone. We are born with powers that usually strengthen over the years and through practice. I have the power to control the earth, the winds, and I can also control a person's mind. Yes, that was how I put you to sleep. Although I must admit, it did take some effort to put both you and the girl to sleep. You have strong minds. Some people are very hard to control. But eventually, their minds surrender to me.
"You have telekinesis, one of the most rarest and most powerful of the powers. Both you and the girl. I'm also very sure that that isn't the only power you have. But we shall discover more. Never fear."
It took a moment for all this to sink in. It was a lot to take in. But I managed. I still had a thousand questions running through my mind, but I didn't ask them because I didn't know how to put those questions into words. Rapier stopped so quickly that I bumped into him.
"Your friend is through here" he said. He stepped aside and I saw a door which I hadn't seen earlier because, well, I was thinking deeply.
He took out a key from inside his pocket and pushed it through the lock. The door swung open, without the need of turning it. At first, the room looked empty. Rapier looked around in confusion. Once he'd walked a bit further through the threshold, however, Amelia jumped out from behind the door and flattened him on the floor. She put her arm around his neck and breathed, "Who are you and why the hell did you bring us here?" Rapier struggled for breath. He looked me in the eyes and suddenly, my legs started moving of its own accord. I couldn't fight the force. My body walked towards Amelia and pulled her off of Rapier. "What are you doing?", she screamed at me, pommelling her fists on my chest. "I don't know what I'm doing or why I'm doing it," I shouted back. Now that Rapier was free, he jumped to his feet and I immediately felt my body come back to my control.
"I'm sorry, Jake, I had to use you to get her off me," he said.
"Yeah, it's okay," I said weakly, rubbing my chest where Amelia had hit me. "But you could have used Amelia herself. Why me?"
"Because eye contact is necessary for mind bending in most cases. I could have used her, but I would have needed extreme concentration, which a bit hard to do when someone is trying to choke you."
"Whoa, back up. Use me? What am I, like, a trash can? And mind bending? What's that? Some kind of voodoo magic?" Amelia asked, with a hint of impatience in her voice.
"I'll explain everything later, Amelia," I promised her. "But tell me, Rapier, what did you mean when you said that everyone here is a superhuman? I mean, how could so much people just be born with powers? It's just... unnatural."
"Ah, I forgot to mention. Everyone here isn't a superhuman. Some are normal humans who help us out in some.....things. But not to worry, all of them have been sworn to secrecy. If they ever told anyone about us , I mean, just think about it, which person in their right mind would even believe them?
"But enough talk, you should rest. We've got a long day of training and other stuff to do tomorrow. Rest up! And Jake, you can return to your room now." He turned around without another word and walked briskly out of the door."Superhumans?" Amelia asked me.
"I'll explain soon, alright? It's such a big headache, all this stuff. How about tomorrow? I'll meet you outside your room. Just try not to flatten and choke me when I reach."
She smiled at me and said, "As long as you don't try to put me to sleep and take me to some weird place, I think we're cool. And also, try to wake up early. You know you sleep like a dead ox, Jake Mason. Just don't leave me hanging."
I smiled back at her and made my way back to my room. It was only once I was outside it did I realize that Rapier never actually answered my question. And the fact that he said that the normal humans help them out in some "things", like he wasn't really sure about how to explain what they did. Suspicious? You bet.
I thought about finding him and asking him about it again when I saw my bed and all other thoughts just vanished from my head. I crashed onto it just like a dead ox.
