CHAPTER 1 - NEW STUDENT.

WEDNESDAY - 9:06 AM.

"Have you've seen that new guy?"

"He's so hot, yet mysterious."

"You know, he's been late to class for 2 weeks now. Not a good way to start off here at Raid Valley High School."

I swear, every person I walked passed was only talking about the new student. He was new, whatever. We had new students every year, why does he stand out so much to everyone? Because he's late? Half of the student body here is late to class. I wish everyone would shut up and leave the poor guy alone.

Sure, I never really did see him around the halls but all the remarks about him made me feel like I already knew him.

I walked up to my locker, unlocking it and trying to push my books into my locker. My locker was a complete mess from all the endless books we had received this year. Senior year was the best and worst time at Raid Valley High School. Especially, hell week.

"Okay, but, the new guy, what's his name? Wade? He's super hot."

Brittney slide right next to my locker. She was twirling her hair between her fingers and giggling. Remind me to figure out why I was best friends with her again.

"Well, whatever his name is. He probably just wants to get through the school year."

I shut my locker and Brittney gasped. Turning my head around my shoulder, the new guy stood at the entrance of the school. He looked like he just rolled out of bed and put on his shoes and drove here. Hopefully he doesn't smell too. Fuck, he is hot with that bed head though.

He walked down the hall, books in his hands, and head held up. Mr. Confident over here walking through the hall like he owned the place. His eyes met mine and nodded with a slight smirk. I blinked. Brittney besides me, gasped once again.

"He did the nod! He did the nod!"

I glanced her way and furrowed my eyebrows together, "what is your deal with him?"

"I'm gonna ask him out."

I raised my eyebrow and parted my lips. She turned and oddly enough, pushed her chest out and started chasing after him. Her heels smacking against the floor tile was all that you could hear for miles.

Boy, what did I get myself into when I decided to be her friend two years ago?

Lunch time rolled around the corner and I found myself sitting on the stairs behind the school pointing my camera in every and any direction.

This camera meant so much to me. It was my grandfathers who passed it to my father and now passed it down to me. Unfortunately, my mother never had a boy. I almost killed her during the pregnancy. There was many different complications and during labour, she hemorrhage after pushing me out and lost a ton of blood. She was in the ICU for two weeks and I was at home with my father who took many photographs of me.

She had me and that was enough for her.

I pointed towards a tree that was beginning to die since fall began a few days ago. A guy was sitting alone reading a book called,"The Great Gatsby." He took a drink from his water bottle without taking his eyes off. I pressed down on the shutter button and the flash went off, releasing a bright white light.

My cheeks flushed red as I turned my body around on the stairs and looked down at my feet. I could feel his eyes burning into my back and that made me blush ever more. Maybe I should double check next time to make sure the flash isn't on.

I glanced down at my phone, the time reading, 12:29 PM. Lunch was over and the bell would ring any moment now.

Someone stepped on the stairs, startling me from my own world. My phone jumped out of my hand, and bounced off the bottom stair, and landed on the screen. I'd be lying if I said that I didn't pray for it to be shattered.

A hand reached down and grabbed my phone. I glanced up and noticed it was the guy that I took a photograph of. He smirked, handing me back my phone.

"Nice camera," he grinned.

If you put a tomato and me together, you wouldn't know which one was which.

***

School was over in under 2 hours and I shoved my books into my bag and rushed out of class. Tonight was the finale of Grey's Anatomy and you'll be damned if I miss it. Dinner, Grey's, and a big old blanket was my plans for the night.

I pulled my car keys from my bag and walked towards my car. If it weren't for that little cafe on the corner of south street, I wouldn't have the privileged of driving home. Don't get me wrong, walking is great exercise, but 3 years was way too long and if I wanted to go to college, I was going to need a car eventually.

"Darby!"

I cringed, putting a fake smile on. I turned around and saw Brittney headed my way. The way she carried her weight made me sick to my stomach. She used to be overweight but one summer, a boy made fun of her and she decided to take it upon herself and loose over a hundred pounds. She is now only 105 and looks like skeleton.

"West said yes!"

"Who?"

"Oh the new guy!"

"Oh okay," I nodded. "To what again?"

"We're going on a date, well, double date. I invited you! So find yourself a date and I'll see you Friday."

Brittney making plans out of my control was enough to irritate me to the point I delete her contact out of my phone. Don't worry, I have number memorized due to the fact, she calls me every night. I wish I knew what I was getting myself into.

This was going to be a very long year.
