CHAPTER 2 - WHAT THE HELL

WEDNESDAY 6:30 PM

I pulled up into my driveway, noticing my mother walking out of the house. She was yet again heading to work. I could see the exhaustion rolling off.

"Hope tonight isn't too busy, mom."

"Thanks sweetie. Dinner's in the fridge, just heat it up if you get hungry or if your father comes home. See you sometime tomorrow."

If he ever comes home.

I smile, waving her goodbye.

She worked at the hospital and constantly taking double shifts. Money wasn't the issue here, it was that my mother and father were bickering and fighting for no reason. Her only escape was to work and his was to never be anywhere near the house.

I dragged myself upstairs and into the shower. I pressed my forehead against the wall, water beating gently on my back, and let out a sigh. I just wanted my parents to remember what marriage was about; what they promised each other.

The doorbell rang, snapping me back into reality. I hastily dried off, slipping into sweatpants and a comfy top, heading downstairs. As soon as it was open, Brittney barged through the door."

'Well, hello to you, too," I said.

"Hey," she said over her shoulder.

I shut the door behind me and found her sitting on the kitchen counter. Her thumbs tapping away and eyes glued to the screen.

"Who are you talking too?" I asked, grabbing a water from the fridge.

"West," she bit down on her lip. "He's so cute, Darb."

I nodded, throwing her a water. Brittney caught it, setting it down next to her.

She showed me a picture of him, he was sitting on a workout machine and looking straight at the camera. It looked like he was caught off guard. I couldn't help but notice his sweaty body and his sharp jaw line.

"He's not that bad," I lied.

"Oh whatever, he is so cute. Maybe even the cutest guy in senior class."

I gave her a thumbs up.

I felt my phone buzz inside my pants pocket and pulled it out.

Biting down on my lip, I looked over at Brittney who was chatting away with Weston. I clicked confirm and immediately shoved my phone back into my pocket. Brittney looked up at me and smiled widely at me.

"He called me pretty."

"Anyone in their right mind would see that you are very pretty, Brit."

"Not two years ago."

Brittney used to weigh 215 pounds. She met a boy and they clicked right away, he called her pretty and that she was his everything, until they met at her favorite restaurant and he made fun of her for eating more than he did. He called her, fat, pig, hog, whatever name you could think of. She went to a weigh loss camp during summer and came home 100 pounds less.

"What happened two years ago is in the past, Brittney. You were just as pretty back then as you are today."

"I was so ug-lay." She exaggerated. I shook my head. "Hey, your mom working again tonight?"

"Yeah, this is her second double shift this week," I leaned against the counter. "Things aren't getting any better. I hope they don't get a divorce."

She put a hand on my wrist and gently giving it a squeeze, reassuring me that everything will be okay. "Everything will be okay in the end, if it's okay, then it's not the end."

I smiled at her. "Let's go watch Grey's."

***

Brittney and I were screaming by the end of the episode. Cliffhangers were one of the most annoying thing that could happen at the end of a finale, but not just only, but 4? Come on now.

"That was so messed up. 4?!" Brittney shouted.

I laughed, agreeing with her.

I got up from the couch to go get another serving of pasta when my phone buzzed in my pocket. I grabbed it, thinking it was my father telling me he would be home soon considering it was 8, but it wasn't. It was a message from Weston.

I looked at Brittney from across the way, giggling at her phone

I looked at Brittney from across the way, giggling at her phone. I sighed, pushing my phone back into my pocket, ignoring him.

Oh, what the hell have I gotten myself into?
