Chapter 2: Impressions

❄️ Mab ❄️

My mother calls me in the middle of the night. The call changes my life. It was like every other call except it wasn't just a call. I remember every word she said.

"Mab, move the stuff in the other room someone is staying with us and it might take a while."

I couldn't ask her about it but I knew how to put two and two together.

This is the first time my mom used my nickname. When mom says a while it clearly is going to be longer than a while. Mom had gone over to the neighbors to check on them because he heard a noise. There were police cars all over the place at Mrs. Clary's house. And even though my siblings and my father were asleep I was wide awake because I could put two and two together. And I never did like Mrs. Clary. She was a grumpy old woman who was set in her ways. She climbed the social ladder without care or concern about who she stepped on and there was one person she stepped on quite a lot.

I've never really seen Mikaila Mallenson, and by that I mean I haven't seen her face. I see her in school in the hallways, she watches varsity teams train sometimes, and she likes to read on the benches but I've never really seen her face and it doesn't help that I'm far sighted. My parents genes suck for giving me dad's messy black hair and mom's messed up brown eyes. I don't resent it though. So I have to wear glasses sometimes, big deal. Anyway, back to the topic...

"Matthias! Do you have a shirt on?" Mom yelled upon entering the house. I really wish my mom would stop asking me that question.

"Yes. I'm wearing a shirt. It was one time and it was really hot." I rolled my eyes and walked out of my room just in time to see my mom reach the top of the first set of stairs.

"This is my oldest son, Matthias. He'll show you where you can sleep. I'm really sorry but I have work tomorrow so I can't show you around. If you don't want to go to school tomorrow I'll talk to the principal and get you and Matthias excused. Sleep well and make yourself comfortable, okay?" My mom said in that really fast way of hers. But my eyes couldn't be swayed from staring at the raven haired girl who exited that grouchy old woman's house and entered my life.

One look into her baby blue eyes and I just knew...

From now on everything would change.

❄️ Mikaila ❄️

Mrs. Valero left and there was a very long very awkward moment of silence.

"You're Mikaila" he said, I couldn't tell what he was thinking. For some reason I really wish I knew. "You're Mab" I replied bluntly. "You go to Sigma Academy... Or at least you did last year. Are you going to be able to-" he stuttered. I could tell he was having a hard time putting it into words without offending me so I cut him off. "My brother paid for my tuition in full with our parents' money so I'll be able to finish high school" I explained. "Oh, your room is two doors down. The door is open. If you need anything just knock on my door." He said promptly, moving to re-enter his room. "I wouldn't want to wake you up" I shrugged. "You wouldn't wake me up, I'm a bit of an insomniac" he retorted. I had to laugh a little at that. "So am I" I smiled. "Cool, goodnight Mikaila" he said, his voice making it sound sort of like 'mi-kay-luh'. It was the first time someone ever got her name pronounced right. "Goodnight Mab" I returned before entering my room and collapsing against the door.

"Oh God, someone wake me up this is too good to be true" I thought, biting down on my lower lip and smiling like a total weirdo.

I put my things aside and fell into the soft mattress, falling asleep in a dreamy daze.

It was the best sleep I ever had since living with my grandmother.
