Marissa's POV

"Marissa."

I snapped out of my trance and looked for the source of the voice. I looked to my right and saw Livie looking at me with concern written all over her face.

"Are you okay?" she asked. "I've been talking for about five minutes now, and you never answered me. What's up?"

"Nothing, just reminiscing, I guess," I said.

"You guess? Mare, it's okay to be sad. What happened last year won't ever happen again."

"It better not."

We stopped our conversation and turned to our English teacher--as well as our Drama teacher--Mrs. Rigsby.

"Okay, so today we going to be starting our persuasive speeches," she announced. Some people gave cheers (Livie), while others gave groans of protest (Me).

"Why?" a boy from the back of the class asked.

"Because you have to, that's why," Mrs. Rigsby said. "The state says you need to, so that's what you have to do. Now, I would like for you to come up here and pick a topic to do."

Everyone got up at once and took a piece of paper that she was handing out. I sat back down and waited for Livie to sit back down. As I was waiting, Ricky sat down in the seat behind me, causing me to turn around.

"What one are you going to do?" he asked in his Boston accent.

"Um, that one," I said pointing to a topic.

"'Should minors who commit serious crimes be tried as adults?'" he read. "What do you think?"

"I think yes. What about you?"

"I agree with you."

"Oh, and class one more thing," Mrs. Rigsby said. "If you want, you can get with a partner, and do a little debate."

"Mary and Mark should partner up," the guy from earlier said.

"Yeah, they should," someone else said. The rest of the class started agreeing.

"Yeah, I'm down," Mark said.

"Me too," I agreed. The class cheered and went back to doing what they were doing before.

"So, what are we doing?" Mark asked. Him and Livie switched places.

"This one." I pointed to the same one I'd showed Ricky moments before.

"No," he said. "It's too stupid."

"You're too stupid," I retorted.

"Oh, how mature," he said.

"Fine, oh wonderful big brother, what did you have in mind?"

"Lowering the age for teens to drive."

"No."

This went on for about the whole class period. He would give me a topic, I'd shoot it down, and vice versa. Finally, after almost an hour of bickering, Live gave us a topic that we both liked.

"Ooh," I said. "That's a good one."

"Yeah, I have to agree with that," Mark said.

"Mrs. Rigsby?" I said as she walked past our table.

"Yes, Mary?" she asked.

"Can we interact with the class to help them choose which person has the better argument?" I asked.

"Sure, I think that's a great idea."

"Good, just asking before I actually did it."

"What's your topic?" she asked. I told her our topic and waited for her reply. "That's a good one," she said. "I can't wait to hear you two debate."

"Oh, it's going to be really funny," Livie said. "You should've heard them trying to pick a topic."

"Liv, the martians can hear them," Ricky said.

"Rude," Mark and I said in unison.

"So?" Ricky asked shrugging.

"Fucker," Mark said.

"Good."

Before we knew it, the bell went off, signaling for us to report to our next class. Ricky, Mark, Livie, and I walked out of the classroom together and walked over to our lockers. Ricky slung an arm around my shoulders as we walked. Ever since that incident a year ago, we've never been closer.

Thank God, he never told Mark exactly what had happened that night. All he said was that he caught my boyfriend beating me and he stopped him. He never said anything about why he was there, or what all was said. And for that, I am forever grateful.

I traded my English stuff for my science stuff. I got out my binder and text book in record time, and headed to the science lab with my brother and best friends.

All throughout science, I was constantly bickering with Mark about our English project since Mrs. J gave us a free day.

After an hour of bickering, the bell rang again and we headed to social studies. Today was the day we had to present our projects on the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

I brought mine in yesterday so that I wouldn't forget it. I drew a map of their journey, and I must say that I did a terrible job on it.

After about an hour of presenting, class was finally over. I didn't get to present today, so I'll have to present on Friday. Yay. (Please note the sarcasm)

The gang and I walked out of the classroom and went to our lockers once again. I put all of the stuff in my arms inside my locker and walked over to Mark.

"Ready?" I asked as Ricky walked over.

"Yep. Should we wait for Livie?" he asked. He nodded his head at Liv and I followed his nod. And low and behold, Livie and Daniel were by her locker this close to kissing.

"Get a room!" Ricky shouted over to them.

They jumped apart and turned to glare at us. Livie flipped Ricky off as Mark and I laughed our heads off.

"C'mon," I said still giggling. Ricky wrapped an arm around my shoulder as we walked.

We walked into the lunch room together and jumped in line. Soon enough, it was our turn and we all got pizza and an apple with some milk.

We headed over to our table and sat down. Ricky was on my left and Mark was in front of Ricky. Before we knew it, Livie set her tray in front of me; Mark on her right, Daniel on her left.

"Boys," Livie started. "This is Daniel, Daniel this is Mark and Ricky. Mark is Mary's older brother, and Ricky is Mark's best friend."

"Pleasure to meet you," Daniel said.

"Dude, why are you so proper?" Mark asked. I slyly kicked him under the table, causing him to yelp and grip his leg.

At some point during the exchange, someone sat on my right and started talking to Daniel.

Livie was smiling at me with a knowing look. I turned to the unknown person and gasped as I saw who was sitting beside me.

Mr. Ryans.
