Chapter 5

(Y/N)'s POV

I didn't realize how long I had been sitting there until the atmosphere around me began to shift.

At first, it was subtle—barely noticeable. The quiet that had settled into the hallway for what felt like hours slowly began to change, replaced by the sound of approaching footsteps. Not the light, routine steps of nurses or doctors, but something heavier. More hurried. Accompanied by voices—low, overlapping, uncertain. The kind of voices that carried concern, even when they tried to hide it.

I lifted my head slightly, my movements slow, delayed, as if my body needed time to catch up with my thoughts. My eyes followed the sound before my mind fully registered what I was looking at.

And then I saw them.

They stood at the far end of the hallway at first, almost frozen in place, like they didn't know how to move forward. For a brief second, it felt like everything paused again. Like time hesitated, waiting for something to happen.

Then they started walking.

Closer.

Step by step.

Their expressions were different—each one carrying something their words hadn't yet said. Some looked tense, others worried, some trying too hard to remain calm. But beneath all of it, there was something undeniable.

They were scared.

And somehow, seeing that made everything feel even more real.

My fingers tightened slowly in my lap as they approached, my breathing uneven without me realizing it. I hadn't seen them properly since the accident. Not like this. Not in a way that made everything feel so immediate.

"(Y/N)...," Suho's voice came first, softer than I had ever heard it before. Careful. Measured.

I stood up, but even that felt slow, like my body was resisting the movement. For a moment, I didn't know what to say. There were too many things sitting in my chest, too many emotions tangled together, but none of them seemed to form into words.

So I said the only thing that mattered.

"He woke up."

The sentence came out quiet.

Simple.

Too simple for something that had taken four weeks to happen.

Their expressions changed instantly.

Relief.

Real, visible relief.

It passed through them like something they had all been holding back at the same time, something they had been waiting for but didn't dare to expect.

But it didn't last.

"...But he doesn't remember me."

This time, my voice dropped slightly.

Softer.

Heavier.

And just like that—

Everything shifted again.

The relief faded almost immediately, replaced by something else. Something quieter. Something more uncertain. The kind of silence that didn't need to be filled to be understood.

"What do you mean... he doesn't remember you?" one of them asked, his voice careful, like he wasn't sure if he should even ask.

I lowered my gaze slightly, my fingers curling into my palm as if I needed something to hold onto.
