2 travelling girls

A week later they came to  pick up my mother. They came in a group of seven, 4 males and 3 females mom not included. Father sent me to my room, my face was black and blue because of the beatings so I couldn't be downstairs, but I could still make out that only 16 werewolves fought in this particular battle and that other werewolves were fighting their own battles against the same overwhelming enemy.

After about fifteen minutes, they departed and father went on with his business. I sat silently in the corner on the windowside of my room when I saw something that scared me really bad.

My best friend Lily.

Only her face is visible as she whispers; "Hello there Lizzy," she climbs onto the windowsill with little to no concern about herself. "I need to talk to you." she should be more careful about something so insignificant.

"Well you are here now, so you might as well say it now. Speak up" I agree with her helping her come fully inside. "However, you should be more cautious with yourself, you might get injured."

"I think we both need to get away from here, this house and this village." She drops the bomb, rather stoically.

"What? Where do you think I could go, how do you think I will survive on my own, because you, lady, are certainly not coming with me, and more importantly, what of mother and father?" I whisper yell at her, not wanting father to be anymore disturbed than he already is because of mother.

"You... I... I won't leave you if... I have all the skills necessary for survival! And we could go find our wolves! Your dad is not treating you right... and he is strong enough to take care of himself and your mom"

I consider what she said before I come across quite a big problem. "You want to go with me to gods know where, with the excuse of 'finding your wolf'? That's insane, even for you. Why do you really want us to go? What's wrong?" I say suddenly getting concerned by my own thoughts.

"That's not... You know I'm an orphan, right?" She looks at me to see the slight nod I give. "Well, I came here when I already was twelve, I was never adopted because the younger kids are cuter. Now, the orphanage is closing, and I have nowhere to go, and nobody can afford a teenager. I want to get away from here. You are the only real friend I have, so I should take care of you. Pack your things gal, 'cause we, the beauty and the brains, are going to start anew tomorrow during school, or well, just before it and... You know what I mean!" She commands akimbo, kind of explaining before trying to lift the mood with her usual cheerful attitude.

Time is going really slow, which is the first time for me. It's not hard to act like nothing changed beacause I  just have to put up my façade, but it feels like I'm leaving something important behind. I'm pretty sure Lily feels that too though, so I shouldn't complain.

Finally I hear the bell ring. I think I'm going to miss that. Leaving the classroom I see Lily talking to the dark-haired guy she told me she 'had the hots for' last week, probably saying farewell and explaining that and why she's leaving. Sometimes I wish I would have someone -other then Lily of course- to talk to, greet. I wish I could be there for someone who needs me, because Lily wouldn't need help if she was falling of a cliff while she's surrounded by heavily armed soldiers at the same time! She's always so independent and confident.

"You coming, silly?" her voice snaps me out of my thoughts "We have to get going soon, if we want to find a good shelter before the darkness invades" she laughs.

"Yes, sorry, I was thinking about something..." I hesitate about my next words "I... T-Thank you, Lily, for everything, you're the best friend anyone could want."

The words bring tears in her eyes. She just gives me a silent hug, speachless, while quietly crying on my shoulder. I'm trying to comfort her, but awkwardly patting her back is not the best way to do that.

We went over what we had to take, and put as much food as father could miss into our bags.  I just hope that it won't be too much, Lily has told me that he was going to far time and time again, but I can't get rid of the feeling something is wrong. I will always need my parents  to keep something from my past and I still want to satisfy my curiosity about this feeling.

Taking one last look at our house, the only thing I want to do right now is give momma a hug, tell her how much I love her and look in her eyes once more.

That's not possible.

We don't have to walk far to get out of the town, for we already live at the edge, and there are only some farms as we approach the woods.

We take our first steps in the forest at about nine in the afternoon and find a nice little clearing some time later. Different shades of green surround us, little flecks of late sunlight fall on the ground and our tents while the only sounds we hear are those of early owls and a doe we passed on the way.

Lily shows me how to pitch a tent before departing to collect food, so now I'm collecting dry wood for a campfire. As I turn around to go back, I hear a scream. I drop everything I was holding. It's Lily's.

"What's wrong?! Lily!"  I run as fast as I can towards where I hope she is.

"Ellie! I'm here, I'm fine." she tries to reassure me making some weird laughish noises.

I can now see her way too happy face as I reach some kind of berry bush so I send her an incredulous look.

"Really, Liz, I just... Sorry for scaring you but it's nothing, I just thought I saw something but it's nothing. Really." She adds seeing my glare.

"Okay Li, if you say so. But you're cooking as punishment. I want to sleep so wake me up when it's done." I say immediately going to the tent.

She just stands there a little dazed looking at the dark green tent.

"Goodnight Lily, see you at dinner!"
