"So," she drawled letting the moment set in as the fluttering of her chest refused to fade, "Um, I know this may sound a little too upfront but," she let herself catch her breath, the nerves matched by the thrill of him being beside her.
"What's your name?" The question was hushed yet at the same time meant so much. She couldn't bring herself to come up with a guess of what his name was, every name seemed too ordinary for him. She never had met a person whose face she didn't automatically choose to forget, knowing that attachment didn't exist in this life. Then he'd made her feel things that had been so foreign yet at the same time familiar.
His eyes once again seemed to lose sight of his surrounding as her questions finally seemed to resetnate in his head, the outer corners crinkled, lost in himself. She internally pinched herself as the atmosphere shifted from welcoming to cold for what felt like an eternity. She had to wonder how quickly time had gone by as she sat avoiding his empty stare, the train was only one stop away from where she was to get off, the dread already weighing her down. She knew that he would soon be forgotten, just another face in a sea of hopelessness. She'd come to respect the world that she was raised in, everything bland yet safe. The stranger who she knew still sat contemplating her question wasn't bland or safe, he was everything she'd been taught to fear, yet she couldn't help but yearn to stay by his side. So she let her eyes fall back to the blur of colors in the window passing by without a care, ignoring the way her beating heart felt like it had been cracked in half.
As the train came to a soft stop, the last of the people waiting by the clear doors as she solemnly picked herself up, leaving the excitement of her morning behind. She heard her heels click on the ground while she made her way into the faded skies embrace, leaving behind her smile.
When she had completely exited the train and watched it flee out of sight she continued her mind numbing journey to work, focusing on the city that stood towering her. She watched the people that ran past her, all the same as before yet it almost seemed as if they had grown duller as the morning past. She tried to remind herself that they had not grown duller, life had merely given her a taste of elation that seemed to have the worst aftertaste. Just as she was preparing to walk up the tower of steps that led her to actuality, a hand gripped the bones of her wrist. The warmth of the hold was enough for her to relax, a power she didn't know she could possess. When her eyes met the person who had decided to hold her back from her dull livelihood she was oddly not dazed when she met a pair of chocolate brown eyes.
