The sizzling of bacon woke me up. I moaned and rolled over, pulling the blanket over my head to shield my eyes from the light. Of course, the light wasn't on yet. Just as I feel myself falling back asleep, my mom bounced her way into my room. She swung the door open, making it hit the wall.

"Oh, oops," She giggled. Her hand ran across the wall until she found the switch, I determined this from the sound of her ring scrapping against the paint. "Ruby, dear, did you want to wake up this century?"

I groaned as I noticed the light was seeping through my comforter. "No," I say as a yawn takes position on my face.

"Sorry to rain on your parade," Her shoes couldn't have made more noise as she came over to my bed, "but you gotta..." she starts pulling on my blanket. She should have known better. I tugged on it back, making it a game of strength. "...Get..." she pulls more. This time when she yanks on it she puts her foot on the bed to steady herself. "..UP!" the blanket is ripped from my being and is thrown onto the floor. I get goose bumps and rub my arms with my hands.

I squint to look at my mother. Her curly auburn hair was tamed behind a headband, and her face was still natural. I don't see why she would even put make-up on. She has a slim figure and is indescribably beautiful. She has her hands in fists resting on her hips. The sizzling of bacon is a reminder, knocking her back to the kitchen.

I sit up and stretch as I look at the goose bumps on my bare legs. I make a mental note to either turn on the heat before bed or wear pants to bed. I nod, approving my new note, before I stand. I go over to my closet and open it. Only about three dresses were hanging up, the rest of my clothes remain in boxes scattered around my room.

"Guess I'll wear you, Mr. Blue," I took down the blue dress that was knee length. The collar was a v-neck and it had two inch wide straps. I slipped off my shirt and put on the dress. I go to my dresser and look for my white tights. They were MIA so I was forced to look in boxes. It was in the third box I rummaged around in. I held the white leggings up high, like a prize and did a happy dance. I put them on and returned to the closet to grab my silver sandals.

I grab my heavy book bag and go to the kitchen.

"Good morning, your hair is a hot mess." My mom says in a sweet voice.

I nod and set my bag on the table. "Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm not as perfect as you when I wake up."

"Ruby!" She exclaimed as she turned around. My shrug as a response made her turn around again. She picks up the skillet with the eggs and pushes them off onto two plates, both of which had two perfectly golden pancakes sitting on them. She got three pieces of bacon for me, but only two for herself. She carried the plates over to the table as I get a cup down for my milk.

"So, sweetheart." She takes up her fork in her hand. "Today's your first day at this school..." I open the fridge and greedily take the milk out, letting the fridge swing close.

"Yup." I say, popping the p.

"Are you nervous... or?" She crosses her left leg over her right. I opened the milk, breaking eye contact.

"No." I lied, "No, mom," I giggled as I pour my milk, "I'm not nervous." I returned the lid on the milk and then put the milk up. I obtain my glass of milk and sit down where she put my plate.

"Well, it's a new school, a new city, a whole different state," A concerned expression was woven into her stunning facial features.

"Yeah," I pick up a piece of bacon, "but it's a chance to start over..."

She nodded and smiled, the worried look vanished from her face.

"You know what, you're right," she cuts a bite out of her two pancakes. I nodded and do the same. She spoke after she finished chewing and swallowing "You'll make new friends here. No one knows about what happened where we used to live." She smiled and bit into a strip of bacon.

I slumped a little. "Yeah," I say, No one has to know what I did...
