I stopped in my tracks and tried my best not to move. I knew he was coming home but I didn’t expect him to be here so early and alone. Someone was supposed to be accompanying him. I put one foot behind me and the floor squeaked.

"Hello?" Crap.....Damn wolf hearing. The footsteps got closer. He was coming.

I stood frozen in my room. The knob turned and the door opened. I did the only thing I could think of. I put my hands to my eyes and covered them. Maybe the rule about if I can't see you, you can't see me would work. "What the hell are you doing?"

I stood there with my hands over my eyes hoping that he was talking to someone else. His hand grabbed my wrist and moved my hand aside. But I still had my eyes closed. "Laina?"

I finally opened my eyes and stared at him. I felt nothing...no butterflies, no heartache. I was completely over him.

He was smirking at me and checking me up and down.

"Uh, yeah?"

"How you've been? You're looking good." I stared back at him did he just ask him me how I was doing? Did he seriously just tell me that I was looking good? Is this the same guy that two years ago wanted to rip my head off?

It can't be, his being so nice. It looks like him. Maybe Matt had a twin I didn't know about. But he knows my name. What the hell is going here? "Earth to Laina," he waved his hand in front of my face and gave me a smile. "Are you okay?"

"Why..." I can't believe this, "Why are you being so nice?"

He smiled "Laina, I don't hate you so please, let’s get along for the sake of our future heir."

I squinted my eyes and stepped back from him. There is something definitely wrong here.

He stepped forward still smiling and then his eyes got dull and his smile sad "There’s so much that you don't know, I'm sorry for what’s going to happen to you." He gave me one last smile and then walked out.

"Hey, hey wait!" I walked out into the hallway and he was walking down the stairs. "What don't I know? What’s going to happen to me Matt?" I was frantic now. There was something very scary about what he said.

Still not facing me, he said, "I can't tell you, but you'll find out soon," and kept walking down the stairs.

I stood their paralyzed and now I had fear deep in my gut.

It's been two hours since my conversation with Matt and I'm terrified. I'm waiting for one of the pack members that know about the Matt situation to come and get me so that him and I can...you know. It's like I'm a cow at a farm and I'm waiting for someone to take me to the butchers.

There were footsteps.

I clumsily made my way to my bed and sat down. I closed my eyes and let a tear slip out.

The footsteps got closer and closer.

There was a knock on my door followed by a feeble voice that told me what I really didn't want to hear.

"Laina, it's time."

Letting another tear slip out I made my way towards the door. I stumbled and made a grab for the knob. I pulled myself up and laid my body on the door, trying to wipe away the tears that wouldn't stop. This time the voice was more demanding, "Laina, it's time to go."

I nodded even though the person couldn't see me and wiped my eyes with the back of my hand.

I turned the knob and pulled the door open, walked out of my room and closed the door behind me.

I used my shirt to wipe my face and let out a small sniffle in the process.

I straightened up and then finally looked up and met the eyes of the person that was leading me to the butcher himself. “I'm Ready, Mom.”
