chapter one - part one

Normal. A word used to describe the things you're used to; something familiar.

Abnormal. A word used to describe fear. Something that people don't know how to control. They fear they can't tame it. They don't recognize it. It terrifies them.

Cassandra was far from normal and she knew it. Throughout her childhood, she was destined to face the cruel glares of others. She was, is, and always will be an outcast. Being the only blonde-haired and dark-eyed girl in the Gemini community had been embarrassing for not only her, but also for her parents. The Gemini have always been known for their light-eyed and dark-haired appearance, and Cassandra was the exact opposite.

She knew she was different. She had always known it. She could feel it. She tried reaching for it, but she wasn't ready. She could never grasp what her destiny was and what she was meant for in life.

Her parents weren't any help. It was hard for little Cassandra to watch her parents smile for the first time in 10 years when she was boarding the bus for Zodiac High. They got rid of her for 11 years. Finally.

Her parents were like every other Gemini. Her father, William, had dark hair paired with light blue eyes that always stared at her in hatred. He had a pale complexion that would always get red with anger whenever Cassandra spoke up. She had been taught from an early age to put her head down and keep quiet. Her mother was a prime example of that. Still, her mother was a beauty. Long silky brown hair topped with bright hazel eyes that were always casted down to the floor, hiding behind her brooding husband. However, whenever she did look up, her eyes were filled with disgust. She was just like everyone else. Scared of the unknown that lurked inside her daughter.

Cassandra often wished to look like her mother. Life would have been different. How she longed to blend in and be loved. She wished she knew what that felt like.

Now, present time, she stared at the mirror. A girl with long blonde hair, semi-pale skin, and dark brown eyes that could be mistaken for black, stared back at her. Despite her looks, she had been placed in Gemini accordingly. She had the Gemini scar, but she never felt more distant to the culture than now.

She sighed and started to cover up the freckles on her face. No Gemini had freckles. At least she could do something about this trait. Sighing, she grabbed her bag.

She headed to her first class: ancient times (history).
