The smile in my face lost its way as I heard her phone ring for a long time.
I tried twice more. Long rings and beep beep.
When I settled down on the couch with my guitar, the knock on the door was obviously expected as it was my dad's time.
When I opened the door, he threw a casual smile with a box of leftovers from bakery.
I looked at my dad who had shrunk like never before in the last two years. Trace of crinkles lined his forehead in his plain pale face.
We ran a bakery at the Liberty state park street. Usually I delivered the leftovers to the nearest orphanage every night making sure it's untouched and safe.
"What do you want for dinner ?" He asked.
"Hmm. I will have a pizza."
"Okay I'll do the ordering "
I moved out carrying the box which is to be delivered to the Orphanage.
A flash popped up from the phone on my pocket.
Placing the box on the car, i opened the text from her.
"Safe home, comfy on my couch :) "
" Ok. Why don't you attend my call ? " I scrolled back a text to her.
" I wasn't even half way across your street when you called!! "
" Ohh ....."
"Yes " came the reply.
" I was worried for your safety "
" I know to guard myself "
"You are arrogant aga..... " I stopped there as her next text flashed up.
" Okay Good night "
Oh god I snapped. Unpredictable girl.
I retyped the text to "Okay bye."
When I pulled our pick up in front of Saint Peter orphanage arch, Lily came running to me on her tiny feet.
She wore a cute pink gown that I had bought her last Christmas. This girl was like magic to me who could turn me happy irrespective of my mood.
We were special kind of friends.
Probably she must be six by now. After she had been left here when she was a baby of around four months, I had visited her often and we have grown as good friends."Hi Drake !!!" Her green eyes were crystal clear in the darkness.
I lifted her up.
"Hi lily, how you doing?" I asked with our heads resting on each other.
"I missed you" she thrusted her lips out.
"I did too." I hugged her tightly smoothing her brown pop hair.
"I have brought you something "
Holding her on my one arm I opened the car for the box I had brought. I took out her special candy, the spooky chocolate stick.
She smiled. Her tiny teeth flashed as she grabbed the candy from my hands.
"Hey lily." Mrs. Larson yelled as she walked out of her office.
Lily grimaced."Hi Mrs. Larson."
"Hey Drake!! You should stop giving her these candies."
"She gets sick often."
"Oh really?" I asked furrowing at lily.
She nodded no.
"But Candy makes her happy" I said staring at her.
