Chapter 29: Cause a Little Havoc
Jordan turned, hearing her enter the control room. He was seated at the controls, in front of a high-technology, complicated-looking panel that was equipped with the standard keyboard and mouse, but the remaining space was almost completely covered in various switches and colored buttons. She looked at him, noted that he was quite unscathed, apart from a bruise on his cheekbones that was looking dark purple in the dim light. There was an odd releasing feeling in her chest. Jordan was fine. He was unhurt, yes? So what was this? It could not be relief. She did not care that much.
He waved at her cheerfully, another grin lighting up his features. "You were awesome out there." Emyle acknowledged this with a nod. Her gaze was still fixed on his face. He reached up and touched the mark gingerly. "Yeah, Seth," Jordan nodded at the crumpled figure on the floor. "He punched me, but I shoved a table into his head. It was hard knocking him out, his head is the size of Russia. But he's out cold now." Frowning now, he touched his cheekbone again. "My beautiful face!" He sighed. "My chiseled features are ruined now. He got me good, but I was better." At this, he smiled and nudged the unconscious form with his foot.
Emyle shook her head, moving forward and pushing the body over onto its back with the toe of her shoe. It was Seth indeed. "The fact that Seth is here proves that Dr. Valin knows we are not in our room. He is aware of our movements in the facility now, and we have even less time. I must go." She turned and made her way to the door. Jordan noticed that she was griping something in her hand. A gun. Hopefully she would not do anything reckless with it.
After she had taken only a few steps, Jordan called out, "Emyle." He was standing now, looking at her with his blue eyes. His bright, blue, concerned eyes. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. Jordan's jaw worked slightly and she waited for him to say something. Finally he sighed and said, "Kick some ass for me, yeah?" It sounded like that was not what he had originally intended to say.
Knowing that time was passing but ignoring that fact for a while, Emyle walked back to him and held out her fist. "Hit me, bro," she deadpanned, her tone flat and monotonous. This felt unnatural, but she felt that she needed to do it.
He looked at her, eyebrows raised, and commented, "You actually did remember." He raised his own hand and fist-bumped her. Emyle smiled in a dark sort of glee and turned on her heel, striding out the door of the control room. The door swung shut behind her with a kind of finality and he did not really like. Jordan decided that the maniacal, serial-killer grin she gave him was an agreement to his previous statement. And he was never more confident that she would kick some ass for him. Jordan turned back to the panel before him, sitting down on the chair. He looked up at the giant screen before him. This was really high-tech--something that he had not expected or know how to work with. Well, he had no choice now, he simply had to wing it.
"Um..." Jordan wiggled his fingers and set them on the panel experimentally. The screen became brighter and a blue bar popped up. Authorization code and name: ________. What now? Jordan thought. He needed to have the right code to get into the system and Emyle was depending on him to create a distraction so that she could get down to Dr. Valin's private lab without being intercepted by any guards. Feeling the pressure start to build up, Jordan looked around wildly. His gaze landed on the figure that was still lying on the ground, face turned to the ceiling now and spread-eagled like some kind of weird, morbid rug. He crouched down and searched around Seth's chest. His fingers caught on something and he pulled it out. "Yeah!" Jordan pumped his fist and leapt back to the giant screen, clutching Seth's name tag that he always kept on a chain around his neck.
"Let's see," Jordan muttered to himself and turned the card over. Seth Richardson. 7679221bshjw. Grinning to himself now, Jordan typed the name and the code into the white bar. He pressed "Enter" and the screen refreshed to show rows upon rows of video feeds, the square boxes standing out in grey tones. But all of them were blurry and black and white dots would appear at random across the feeds. A proud smirk plastered itself into his face as Jordan realized that his computer code had actually worked. Well, he had his doubts, which he had not bothered to tell Emyle, but now the risk was paying off. He typed in another string of computer code and almost instantaneously the video feeds cleared and focused. He scrolled down, searching for any security guards that would tell him where they were all headed. Most of them were still clustered around the lifts on the first floor and clearly they still awaited new updates on the situation. Some of them were in the cafeteria, eating dinner with their mates. He frowned. It was important that no guards were around the entrance to Dr. Valin's private labs when Emyle got down there. Jordan really needed to do something now. He was running out of time.
