"are you sure this trip is going to be safe?" the pacing worried mother asks her daughter who was packing some final essentials into a rather unusually large suitcase. The Daughter smiles from over her shoulder and then turns to her worried mother grabbing her fidgety hands.
"Mom, I am going to be fine, and this trip is going to go great. And if all goes well, I will be able to get into the University I want. So please stop worrying."
The mother frowns and then shakes her head and smiles trying to trick her brain into thinking everything was going to be alright. Her grown daughter was finally moving away and making something for herself, something a mother hopes for but didn't realize it would come so fast. The last time to see her daughter before she goes abroad.
"Just call me okay, when you get there." the mom says and watches as the daughter picks up the large bag with ease.
The daughter turns and gives another smile and leans over and kisses her mothers forehead.
"I will ma, my ride is probably here, I gotta go." the daughter says and walks past her mom. As she walks past the house she grew up in, she watches as the memories start to collect, she tries to hold onto them so she will have them when she leaves. To remember everything about the rooms as she walks by, to call to them when she needs in her new home. She takes a final deep breath before exiting her house looking back at her mom who was quiet. The girl walks out, the sun instantly hitting her face, it was early morning. The crisp thin air of Colorado hit her face like soft kisses of farewell. She smiled sadly, she was going to miss this air. The freshest air she knew of. A taxi cab waited for her at the end of the driveway and she looked at it with a spark of excitement. It was like the yellow of the cab pulled her heart close to it. It was the color of happiness to most, but right now, it was the color of adventure. She didn't hesitate to meet the taxi driver at the trunk of the vehicle. She loaded in her items and took one last look at her house and then entered the taxi ready for the next big thing.
"So Montey is it? Ready to go?" the taxi cab driver asks fixing his rear view mirror getting a solid look at the girl before pulling the car out of park into drive.
"Yes sir, let's do it." she says and the Taxi cab driver took off with determination to get Montey to the airport in good time.
Montey watched as she passed her town, her city, the place she called home. In her mind she said goodbye to each place, each stranger, and each tree. Her phone buzzed loudly and it cut her trance off, she gazes down to it in her lap, her best friend, right on time.
Allie: I hope you find what you're looking for out there Best friend. Text me when you get to Italy.
Montey: if I don't pass out first! Ill try to text you. See you soon bestie.
Montey locked her phone back and it really didn't take long to get the airport. Colorado Springs air port wasn't too huge, but it was the portal to her journey so she looked at it like it was a glorious castle. With haste she grabbed her things and made her way into the busy airport, people passing her left and right, the sound of intercoms calling last warnings to people to their gates. But all Montey could hear was the intro to dirty harry by Gorillaz in her head. Like a sound track to her movie of her journey to Italy from Colorado. She grinned thinking how dumb that was but, in the end she was the character of her own story, and if there was a movie of her, the song was appropriate enough.
The formalities of airport tasks passed by her, too much was on her mind at this point to even pay attention. The closer she got to the actual gate to her chariot of white wings, the more surreal everything became. She got the chance of a life time, a small town 22 year old girl to move to Italy for free, to become a student at a prestigious school. She breathed shallowly, as if her mind was so focused on the inevitable that her body forgot it needed oxygen. But like a burst of electricity through her, the calling of her gate number woke her from her zombie like state. It was time.
"Italy here we come"she said to herself and falling in line she followed as fellow strangers boarded as momentary bunk mates into the large plane. Their journey to New York was underway and Montey was ready.
