There was a silence in the air that followed once Hermione told Draco of their location. She did not know what reaction to expect from him. As a person with an immense distaste for anything Muggle, Hermione thought he would give her that all-too-familiar sneer and disgusted look the Slytherin Prince had always given her. To cut it straight, Hermione Granger always expected the worst from Draco Malfoy, just because she learned to all these years.
And so she was stunned to her feet when he merely nodded and told her, "Do you know how a Caterwauling Charm is done?"
Hermione blinked at the silver eyes that stared at her expectantly. Is this really Malfoy? How deeply did his change go?
"Granger, I'd permit you to gawk at me another time but not tonight. Our necks are on the line here."
Shaking her head-and her focus-back on track, Hermione muttered a quick 'yes' despite her blush and hurriedly walked down the street, muttering the incantation. From her peripheral, she sees Draco lift his wand arm.
"Expecto Patronum," the blonde whispered.
Hermione paused several steps away from him, watching in fascination as he conjures a Patronus. The wispy, silver light took shape, first the body of a lizard before the big, majestic wings beat around and circled the small space. She couldn't help but admire the Patronus and welcomed the warm and happy feeling it radiated around them. When she looked up, gray eyes were already staring at her own and her awestruck expression.
"Beautiful, isn't he?"
Hermione nodded. Draco turned to the Patronus. "We were attacked at the park near Granger's flat and have Disapparated to her parent's home. If you follow, disable the Caterwauling charm."
The dragon gives him one more loop before flying away; its blinding light competing with the moon up ahead. Both of them watched the Patronus for a while before Hermione asked, "Where's it going to?"
Draco turned to the small woman beside him with an expression set and determined. "To Harry's. He'll know what to do. For the meantime, let's get out of plain sight."
Hermione nodded and led the way to the modest two-storey house with pale yellow paint barely recognizable from the inadequate light, feeling incredibly self-conscious about the fact that Draco Malfoy was about to see her childhood home. Part of her wanted to go back, but she was inwardly too scared to be out in the open again. It's the second time she's been through a direct attack post-war and frankly, she was getting tired of it. Once Hermione grabbed the front door handle, she paused, counted back the days, and groaned.
"What's the matter?" Draco was scanning her up and down, worry etched on his face. He didn't like the anguished look on hers.
"How could I be so stupid?" The girl muttered to no one before she lifted her eyes to the man behind her. "I forgot Mum and Dad's on a vacation. They've mentioned it to me in passing a few days ago but I forgot. They're on a cruise ship."
