River was so thankful school had ended. She had a killer headache. She walked out of her last class and down the hall to the front of the school. River had already said bye to Veronica and Betty who had cheer practice before the pep- rally that night. She didn't know if she wanted to go or not. Shouldering her bag she started the long walk down to her house. A figure moved from the corner of her eye and River glanced over to see who or what it was. Much to her relief it was Jughead.

"God, Jughead you scared me." River admitted with a slight laugh. Jughead let out a low chuckle as he stepped into place next to her.

"Sorry about that," He said stuffing his hands into his pockets. "Are you headed home?" Jughead added. River nodded.

"Yeah, my mom should be home with a speech ready to explain herself." River said looking down at her shoes. Jughead watched her with soft eyes.

"Knowing you, you already have a response prepared." Jughead joked. River smiled.

"I'm just nervous." She admitted. Jughead put a hand on her shoulder, forcing her to stop and look at him. Her crystal blue eyes met his green ones.

"You'll be fine. Would you like me to go with you?" He asked. Biting her bottom lip she thought about it for a second. Then she nodded again.

"Yeah, that would be nice." She agreed. Jughead smiled faintly.

"Let's go." He said bringing them back into the comfortable walk they were having, just enjoying each other's presence.

Later that evening when they had gotten home, River's mother gave her apology speech, which River had then recited her response. The tension was tense until Jughead told River's mom they needed to study for a upcoming test. He guided her up to her room. Currently they sat opposite of each other, both on their laptops. Jughead was glancing up every so often to look at River. Her auburn waves frame her face, crystal blue eyes focused intently on her task.

"Why do you keep glancing at me?" River asked suddenly, shaking jughead out of his trance.

"I am doing no such thing." He opposed. River looked up from her laptop.

"You've glanced at me seven times in the past twenty minutes, what's on your mind?" River said raising an eyebrow.

"Nothing." Jughead dismissed it, closing his laptop. "I should go, it's getting late." He told her looking out the window behind her at the setting sun. River nodded as jughead grabbed his bag. He hesitated before leaning forward and pressing a quick kiss to River's forehead.

"I'll see you later." He said before turning and walking out of the room, leaving a very flustered and blushing River sitting on her bed. The light on her laptop illuminating her face.

A voice from outside her window made her turn towards it. It was Archie's voice.

"What's up Jughead?" He asked, the sound of his voice traveling up to the window. Crawling off her bed, River moved towards the window to watch them.

"What's up is, that i saw you, in the music room with Ms. Grundy." Jughead said taking a step forward. Archie's face went from amusement to terror in a second.

"Keep your voice down!" Archie hissed.

"I'm trying to help you. I'm trying to be your friend here. Even though we aren't anymore." He started. "How long? You and Grundy?" Jughead added. River saw Archie lick his lips nervously. Where Ms. Grundy and Archie together? Romantically? The idea made River want to vomit.

"Since the summer." Archie admitted. River cringed. "I like her." Archie added, not making the situation any better. Jughead scoffed.

"I'm guessing she's the reason you've been acting weird all summer?" Jughead said.

"One of them." Archie replied. River frowned in confusion.

"One of them? There's more?" Jughead said incredulously.

"We were at Sweetwater River on the fourth of July." Archie confessed. "We heard a gunshot. The gun shot."

"Dude, you have to tell someone-" Jughead said defeat written all over him.

"I can't!" Archie cut him off. "Neither can you. If people find out about Grundy-"

"A kid is dead Archie!" It was Jughead's turn to cut him off. "And you're worried about some.. Cougar!" He said raising his voice. River gulped, she couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"Don't call her that!" Archie defended. "She's not like that, she cares about me."

"Stab in the dark." Jughead retorted. "I'm guessing she cares more about herself. She's the one who's telling you not to say anything, right?"

Archie pursed his lips.

"Look, I saw you, she's messing you you. And she's messing your mind!" Jughead went on.

"What the hell do you know about it jughead?" Archie responded angrily. "Or about me even."

"Nothing. But I used to know this guy once, Archie Andrews. He wasn't perfect but.." Jughead sighed heavily. "He always tried to do the right thing, at least." Jughead moved to leave but Archie caught his arm.

"If you tell anyone about this-" Archie started. But Jughead had already pushed himself out of his grasp and left. River watched as Archie stood in front of her house for a second before turning and leaving.

River turned away from the window and sat on her bed, What had she just witnessed?
