Chapter Six - Damsel In Destress
If there was one thing that River hated more than traveling, It was Reggie Mantle. Him and his group of stuck up, half witted, crack heads who just cared about winning at football and having sex with girls. Now thinking of it Reggie almost went above her loathing of traveling. But here she was, standing next to Jughead, as Betty and Kevin sat on the couch, in the schools lounge room, listening to Reggie talk nonsense yet again.
"Cause I want blossom dead." Reggie said sarcastically. "He was like the only good quarterback we had."
"The only decent football player you had." River muttered under her breath. Jughead snorted from beside her.
"I should have sent the cops to you moose." Reggie said pointing the football he was holding at the boy sitting across from him. Moose tensed.
"Here's another unsolved mystery." Reggie started. "What exactly where you and kevin doing at the river huh, or does being with the sheriff's son give you a free pass? Keller?" Reggie said turning towards Kevin who looked like he was ready to punch him.
"I mean let's think about it. If a kid at Riverdale killed Jason, It's not going to be a jock right? Isn't it always some spooky, scrawny, pathetic Internet troll, too busy writing his manifestos to get laid? Some smug, moody, serial killer fanboy freak, like Jughead?" Reggie chuckled looking over at Jughead who looked completely calm. River glanced up at him.
"What was it like Suicide Squad? When you shot Jason." Reggie paused. "You didn't do anything to the body afterwards, you know.." He lead off suggestively.
"It's called Necrophilia Reggie," Jughead said.
"Can you spell it?" River added. Reggie snapped. He lunged at them, jumping over the couch to try and reach hem. Jughead had instinctively put an arm out to shield River. Archie, who had been messing with the vending machine, ran forward and pushed reggie back, who was seething.
"Boys..." Veronica said standing suddenly.
"What do you care Andrews?" Reggie growled. Then Reggie smiled.
"Holy Crap.. Did you and Donnie Darko kill Jason together." Reggie grinned pointing at jughead then at Archie. "Is this some sort of pervy blood brother thing?" He laughed.
"Layoff Reggie." River growled. This seemed to edge Reggie on.
"Did you have something to do with this too nerd? What were you doing those four years while you were gone? Were you planning Jason's murder after what they did to your poor Oliver." Reggie teased. RIver balled her hands into fists, trying to restrain from hitting Reggie. Archie couldn't stand seeing his good friend being teased. He shoved Reggie back. Regie gave him a look that meant certain death. Archie's fist came around first, he landed the punch on Reggie left cheek. Reggie growled and lunged at him, shoving him into the vending machine. The glass shattered and River let out a cry of surprise. Then it was just fists and blood.

That night was the pep rally. River didn't know if she wanted to go or not. She did want to see Betty and Veronica dance though, they had been so excited to tell her all about cheer. Finally she texted Betty and Veronica to let them know the news. Then she texted jughead about the update, to see if he was attending. River went to her closet and pulled out a white button up and a dark grey sweater, as well as black jeans and vans. She changed out of her school clothes and into the new ones. Grabbing her phone from her bedside table, River left the room and went down the long staircase to the first floor. Her mom was making dinner in the kitchen. Taking a seat on the marble island counter, she picked a piece of fruit off a plate.
"I'm going to the pep rally tonight to see Betty and Veronica." River told her mom.
"Who's Veronica?" She asked. River paused, she had forgotten her mom hadn't had she latest updates.
"Just a friend of Betty and I's." River said standing. River's mom nodded.
"Alright, I have to go but i'll see you later tonight." She added, walking to the big oak doors.
When River walked up to the bleachers. The sun had already set and rain had started to fall lightly. Luckily River had brought a small umbrella. Opening it she walked towards the entrance. She spotted Archie first, he was fully dressed in football attire. When he caught sight of River he stopped talking to whoever he was talking to. As River got closer, she saw It was Jughead, that Archie was talking to.
"Hey." She said walking up to stand next to Jughead. He glanced at her then back at Archie. Archie bit his lip before nodding.
"I'll see you later." He said before jogging away. Both Jughead and River watched him go. Then River cleared her throat.
"Um, I need to talk to you Jughead." She said looking at him. The dark haired boy turned to her.
"About what?" He inquired. River looked around before responding,
"It would probably be best to say in private." She said taking his hand and pulling Jughead away from the bleachers area and by a group of trees, the leaves sheltering them from the rain. River took a deep breath.
"I know about Grundy and Archie." She started. Jughead opened his mouth to respond but River Cut him off. " The window was open I overheard your conversation with Archie, I promise I won't tell a soul."
Jughead sighed deeply. "River.." He groaned, dragging his hand through his hair.
"I'm going to go talk to Archie about it tomorrow." River told Jughead.
"What, River no, he'll get mad at you." Jughead objected.
"He's making a bad choice Juggy, and I'm trying to stop him from making it any worse." River said confidently.
"Sorry but I need to do this." River said turning and leaving jughead watching as left him. A feeling a fear washed over him. What was she getting her into.
