Prologue
The water closed over her head, the current quickly dragging her down. She flailed, trying to catch something to save herself, but instead hit her head against the cliff. Her flailing ceased, her body stunned by the blow.
A soft, lilting melody, full of regret and sadness began to drift through the inky blackness. It was a sorrowful tune, yet it was soothing at the same time. The young unicorn was drawn to it, her eyes searching through the darkness for the source of the tune.
Out of the darkness of the rough waves came a merpony, singing her haunting tune that had first attracted the filly. As she swam closer, the unicorn slowly lost consciousness. The final thing the unicorn knew was strong arms lifting her sinking body, and the whispered words of the merpony.
"You'll be safe now, as long as I'm here I'll protect you."
