Chapter 1, Sacrifices

Bridgette

A white woman, pale as the moon and glowing like the sun, smiled down at me, "Thank you Bridgette. You have done well."

I sat up, ignoring the spinning of my head and the pounding in my skull. I didn't have to ask who she was. I already knew. "I haven't done enough." I whispered.

She smiled gently, but didn't reply.

"Please." I pleaded, my heart hurting, "I have to go back. They need me. I need to help them."

She stroked my cheek, catching a few tears that I hadn't realised were there, "I cannot."

"Why...?" my voice cracked as I held her hand to my cheek, "Please mother, I can do more. I just need another chance."

She gave me a sad look, "How far are you willing to go?"

A smile spread across my face, "As far as you want me to, Mother."

She looked to the floor, "Good luck Bridgette. I will see you soon." She said before giving my shoulders a light push, making me fall into the white abyss.

Melanie

We were walking through the forest. That's all. Just Jake, Haley and I. Then it hit. A pain. A pain so excruciating that I fell to the floor instantly.

I felt Jake's arms around me, but couldn't see through the white spots that clouded my vision. It hurt.

Tears fell from my eyes as the pain ricocheted through my body, making it convulse with every wave until I felt like I was on the edge.

I could hear screaming. I could hear a white noise in the back of my head, buzzing around.

My breathing was slow. Everything just slowed. It was like time stopped, and I was left alone in my own thoughts, with the pain – now only a numbing throb.

I stood up, now alone. Where was I?

There was a ladder.

I looked at it for a moment, until it hit me. I should climb it. That ladder was something beautiful, like a beacon of hope and pleasure in this world of numb pain. So did. One step at a time, a climbed the ladder. And with each step, I felt myself getting number. But it was a good numb. Like peace. There was nothing to be worried about. Nothing to be scared of. Just me and the ladder.
