“Are we hanging out tonight?” Phil asks Y/N as we walk her to her locker. She smiles slightly as she readies a response. She slows her pace as something ahead of us catches her eye. Alex is standing and waiting at her locker. What is he doing there?
“Alex!” she says in surprise. He turns toward her and smiles. He steps up to her and kisses her on the lips. I feel my jaw drop and it feels like Alex has actually reached inside my chest and is squeezing my heart.
“Hey babe,” he says. Not her boyfriend, she says. He seems a little too friendly not to be her boyfriend. I swear Alex looks at me and smirks. The bastard.
“W-what was that for?” Y/N takes a step back from him. There’s a faint blush on her cheeks. My face settles into a frown, and Phil nudges me slightly.
“I’m not allowed to kiss my girlfriend?” he asks her with a smile on her face.
“Your what!?” she squeaks out, her eyes widening. Alex looks down sheepishly. I roll my eyes at him. Was he seriously doing this? Did this actually work on girls? He rubs her arms gently.
“I–uh, was actually going to ask you officially… over dinner tonight.” This time I’m sure he looks back at me with that smug smirk on his face. I think I let out a growl or something, because Phil hits me again. I can’t stand here and watch this anymore. So I walk away. I don’t look back to see if Phil follows me, or to see if Y/N even notices that I’m gone, I just leave.
Every time something even slightly good happens between Y/N and I, it seems like he’s right there to mess it all up. After talking to her today, it seemed like something could happen between us. But then here comes Alex, and he kisses her!
I angrily spin the combination on my lock. I mess up twice and groan in frustration. I slam my head against the locker. I haven’t even been at this school long, and I’ve already managed to fall head over heels for this girl that could give two shits about me.
“Dan!” I look up and see Y/N running up to me with Phil trailing behind.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” she asks me with a slight frown on her face.
“I… I think I forgot my lock combination,” I chuckle. I run my hand through my hair as I turn to face them both. Phil looks at me with a knowing look, and I instantly regret ever telling him about my crush.
“What’s your combo?” she asks as she steps up to my locker. I tell her and she spins it quickly, opening it on the first try. She gives me a smug look.
“Ah… well…” I clear my throat, “Why aren’t you with your boyfriend?” She frowns at me. I step up to my locker and change some of my books out to avoid looking at her.
“Is that why you left?”
“No,” I lie.
“I told you earlier he’s not my boyfriend. We’re just going to the dance together. That’s it.” I look at her with my eyebrow raised.
“Doesn’t seem that way from my view.”
“Alex and I don’t even talk outside of school. He’s called me maybe twice, and that was just to ask if I’d gotten my dress yet. Why do you care, Dan?” I shut my locker and face her head-on.
“I don’t.” Phil snorts and shakes his head. I shoot him a look.
“Are you two just going to stand here and argue, or are we ready to leave?” Phil asks.
“I’m ready. Yours or mine?” I toss my car keys in the air.
“I actually drove today,” Y/N says, “I’m going to go home and change. Just text me wherever you guys end up going. I can’t do this girly thing anymore.” She tugs at the hem of her dress, and my eyes are drawn to her figure again. The dress she’s wearing is really fitted. She was already attractive, but in this she was stunning. It made me wonder what she had picked to wear to the dance. It also upset me that it wouldn’t be me whose arm she was on that night. I wanted to be the one to show her off. I wanted to be the one to show everyone just how beautiful that quiet girl in the corner was.
“Dan!” I jump at the sound of my name.
“What?”
“She’s gone now. You can stop drooling,” Phil says. I feel my face heat up.
“Shut up, Phil.”
“You’ve just gotten more and more obvious, Dan.”
“Obvious about what?” I play dumb as we walk out to my car. Phil looks at me over the roof of the car.
“You didn’t talk to her for three days, and you practically jumped her when you saw her this morning.” The blush on my face deepens. I quickly slide into the car so I don’t have to look at Phil anymore.
“I didn’t… she…” I fumble with my words, “I didn’t expect her to show up in a dress! Like… fuck! Did you see her legs!? It wasn’t just the dress either, she just looked sexy as fuck today.”
“Please don’t talk about, Y/N like that.”
“Admit it. You thought it too.”
“I did no such thing,” Phil frowns, “She’s practically my sister. That’s just weird. Also, if you want her to like you, you should probably stop bringing up Alex.”
“How? He’s always around!”
“She’s hanging out with us tonight, Dan. Remember that.” We don’t say anything more until we’re at my house. Phil lets Y/N know that we’re hanging out at mine today. I straighten up my room before she makes her way over. By straighten, I mean: shove everything under the bed and in the closet.
“What are you doing?” my brother asks.
“I’m cleaning,” I grunt.
“Why? Are you bringing another girl over?” Phil snorts from his spot on my bed.
“Go away!”
“What happened to that one girl? She was cute. I liked her. Did she dump you? Is that why you’ve been moping around the house?”
“Will you sh–“ The doorbell rings, interrupting me. Adrian and I lock eyes and he runs to the door. I chase after him, screaming at him not to answer the door. He unfortunately gets to it before I can stop him. Y/N is standing on the other side, dressed in skinny jeans, a band tee and a hoodie.
“Oh hey!” My brother steps back and lets her inside.
“We were just talking about you.” Y/N tilts her head to the side. Her eyes flick towards me briefly and a smirk slowly makes its way onto her face.
“Were you?” she smiles, “Good things, I hope.”
“Always,” Adrian winks.
“Okay! Okay! That’s enough! You need to leave.” I grab Y/N by her wrist and drag her up the stairs and to my room.
“I’m sorry about him,” I apologize.
“I’m pretty sure you said the exact same thing the first time you invited me over,” she laughs. We step into my room and her eyes light up at the sight of Phil. He’s laying flat on my bed scrolling through his phone. She quickens her pace and dives on top of him. He grunts out in surprise.
“Hello Philip,” she beams happily.
“Hi… do you greet all your friends like this?” he chuckles.
“Pretty much. Might explain why I don’t have to many.” She rolls off of Phil and sits up. I take a seat at my desk.
“I don’t know, you seem to be rising on the popularity scale.” Y/N rolls her eyes.
“Are you seriously still on this?” she frowns. She says it with such anger that I’m shocked.
“We’re supposed to be hanging out. Not talking about Alex. I don’t want to talk about Alex for fuck’s sake. I’m supposed to be kicking your ass at Mario Kart.” My face flushes in embarrassment. I instantly regret even bringing it up. Why did I even do that?
“Well, less talk, more ass-kicking then, yeah?” Her glare on me hardens.
“Let’s go then, Howell.”
“Why can’t we ever have a peaceful gaming session?” Phil sighs.
