Nat noticed that there was something weird going on with Emma Jane. Was it that she did not want to be friends anymore? Could there 13 years of friendship fade in just one summer? Natalie was pacing in her room trying to think of what could be going on in her friend's head. Finally, her father came and knocked on the door.
"Time for bed, Kiddo. School in the morning." he said through the door.
Nat sighed and opened the door. Her dad never opened the door himself, unless it was an emergency. He believed it was a violation of her privacy. Nat hugged her father good night and went to bed.
The next morning Nat dressed in just a plain white t-shirt and her leather jacket. She loved that jacket. It reminded her of a Michael Jackson song. She really liked his music. Nobody made fun of her for it, mainly because they know she would break their nose if they did.
She finished getting ready, made herself some poptarts, her favorite breakfast, and ran out to her bus stop where her boyfriend Eddy Young. They had been dating for a year and had known each other for four years. Eddy got along really well with EJ too. Those three were inseparable.
He was wearing his favorite hoodie that had the Deathly Hallows on the front and had earbuds in both of his ears, no doubt listening to some musical soundtrack. He was a huge geek, that was something he and EJ bonded over.
She ran up to him and pulled out one of his earbuds and kissed him on the cheek. "Hey, geek." she said. He laughed and kissed her back on cheek.
"Hey, Brit. Welcome back to America." he said jokingly. He grabbed her hand and leaned in to kiss Nat. Nat followed suit. When their lips touched something felt off to Nat. Like she was betraying someone. She pushed away those thoughts and focused on the kiss. Eddy could tell something was off and pulled away.
"Everything ok, Nat?" he asked her, looking concerned. Nat saw the bus pulling up behind him and tried to think of an excuse.
"Yeah, just jet lag. Sorry." she said. Eddy nodded with a look of understanding and wrapped a arm around her shoulders. They got on the bus and rode all the way to school in silence.
Nat was sitting in her homeroom later that day, waiting for Emma Jane to come in. They had not seen each other that day, yet and she wanted to ask her about the day before. She was about to give up on her coming when EJ ran in right before the bell rang. She was wearing a cute black dress with yellow and blue flowers on it and flats. Her hair was up in a messy bun and she was wearing a little make up. It looked like she was trying to impress someone, and asked Kate for help.
EJ sat next to Nat who was stunned by her friend's appearance. Their teacher started talking about the coming school year and how they were almost upper classmen. Nat did not care about that. She was to busy looking at EJ. She looked... good. Like really good. Hot even.
EJ took out her notebook and started writing. Oh no, Nat thought, what are we supposed to be doing?! She elbowed EJ. Emma Jane turned to look at her, she mouthed what. Nat nodded her head to EJ's book and signed what, one of the few signs both of them knew.
EJ wrote down a note and passed it to her. It said that they were writing down what they did over summer. Well, that will be an interesting write.
