EJ woke up on the first day of school, feeling determined. She was going to dress up and make boys notice her. That is all she needed. A boyfriend. That is what would make these feelings for Natalie go away. EJ was sure of it. Only one problem, she had zero make up skills, but her sister had amazing skills. She knocked on Kate's door.
Her sister opened it, already fully dressed. "Hey, Emma Jane, what is up?" Kate asked.
"I want you to make me beautiful. And not 'you are already beautiful, honey' I mean guys will stop and stare at me beautiful. Can you help? Please?" EJ asked. Her sister pondered the idea a bit, but gave in. They spent the next hour picking an outfit, doing hair, and make up, but the end result was worth it.
Emma walked to her first class that day and all around her she heard whispers, but they were not bad whispers. People were saying "Is that Emma Jane Hurt?", "Is Emma Jane wearing make up?", and "What happened to her over the summer?"
They were not the kind of whispers she wanted to hear, but they were better than the ones they used to say about her. She arrived in her first class and saw a cute boy with an empty seat behind him, she took the opportunity. Maybe this is it, she thought, maybe he can help me. She cleared her throat and tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around. His skin was like rich caramel, his hair jet black, and his eyes were a deep brown.
"Hello, I am Emma Jane." she said and extended her hand. She really hoped that didn't make her look too dorky. The guy laughed and shook her hand.
"The name is Lando. Yes, like the Star Wars character." Emma laughed. She was about to say something else when the bell rang and class begun. She was happy how this day was going so far.
Later, on her way to homeroom, EJ bumped into Lando again. And she literally bumped into him, making them both drop their stuff and sent a few papers flying. They were both in a hurry so they quickly picked them up, apologized and walked away, but for a fleeting moment their hands touched. EJ had expected fireworks at his touch, but she all she felt was a slight tingle like that feeling you get when you accidentally touch a stranger.
Since she had that delay she was almost late for homeroom. When she entered the room she saw Natalie waiting expectantly for her. EJ smiled and took the seat next to her. Nat was wearing her jacket again that day, along with a plain old white shirt. It was nothing fancy, but it still made EJ smile. Just being around Nat made her smile lately.
Their teacher, Mr. Dent, started giving instructions to the class. "Ok, class, quiet down. It is good to see you all again. I hope you had a great summer break and I am sure you have wonderful stories about it. Now, instead of telling everyone about your summer individually why don't we write down what we did and read it to the class." he said. The entire time he was giving instruction EJ felt Nat staring at her. It made EJ feel very conscious about what she was doing.
Emma Jane took out her notebook and started writing. Nat got her attention and asked what they were doing. EJ was in disbelief, was she not paying attention? She always does. EJ told her anyways.
Right after homeroom was lunch. The two girls always ate lunch together, along with Nat's boyfriend, Eddy. They met up with Eddy in the lunch line. When they met up, Eddy greeted Nat with a kiss on the cheek. This made EJ feel... mad? Why was she mad? They were dating for at least a year. Was it anger she was feeling or jealousy? Was she jealous that hey were in a relationship? Or because she liked Eddy? No, she didn't like Eddy, not that way.
It was still a very confusing lunch.
