I swim to the surface and my head bobs out of the water. I look around at the unfamiliar scenery of the world above. Maybe I could be like Ariel. Maybe I could find my prince charming around here. I look around, squinting as I saw a figure walking along the coast, the drizzle intensifying into a heavy downpour.
I see the figure sitting down, his prominent features covered by a hood. He picks up a shiny stone and throws it across the water. The rock jumps and barely misses my face. I hurriedly swim over to retrieve the stone. It glimmers in the moonlight and I grab it, marvelling at the beauty of the green stone. I grin, and watch the figure pick up another stone from his pocket, before throwing it again.
One, two three. It bounced, and I retrieved it again. This time, it was a polished blue stone and I tried to mimic his moves. I fling the blue stone across the water, watching as it bounced back to the figure. He jumps up in shock, and his hood whips back to reveal the most stunning beauty I have seen. His golden blonde hair shines in the moonlight and his emerald green eyes sparkled with exhilaration. "Is anyone there?" He shouts to the waves, and I smile, before looking around and swimming towards him.
I wave, and he spots me. I smile and swim closer to the shore, as he walks into the water to take a closer look. "Hey. I think this is yours." I grin, placing the green stone into his hands. He smiles, and pushes it back into my hands. "You should keep this. As a reminder of me." I smile gratefully and accept the gift.
"Who are you anyway? What are you doing on the beach throwing pretty stones?" I ask, glad that it was so dark that he could not see the blush that was growing in my cheeks. "O-oh! I am Adrien. It's nice to meet you, err.." he pauses, and asks me my name. "Marinette. " I simply reply, and look away, now that my face was starting to turn as red as my dear friend Nathaniel's hair.
"...Marinette. I was here just to get away from my father. He hasnt been the best at getting over my mother's disappearance." Adrien looks down, and the sparkle in his eyes disappears, replaced with a dullness that made him seem distant.
"Oh. I'm sorry about your mother. Do you want to throw more stones?" I ask, silently hoping that he would say yes. "Sure! Let's see who can throw it further." He smiles, and picks up the blue stone. I grab my green one and chuck it across the water. It bounced three times before sinking into the deep blue ocean. I smirk at Adrien and he laughs. "That was so cool!" He picks up the blue one and flings it. One, two, three. We tied and I give him a fistbump. "Pound it!" I grin and swim to get the stones. When I returned, Adrien was gone. A message in the sand told me that Adrien had been spotted and had left. I sigh and finger the two smooth jewels he had left behind. I hope I could see him again.
A few years later
The underwater currents gently caress my cheeks, my dark blue hair floating around in wisps. I turn to my mother, who was lying in her clamshell bed. "Marinette...You need to get married soon. I am not well and the city needs a new ruler. " Maman coughs and I kneel down by her bedside. "Who do you have in mind?" I softly ask, tucking away a stray strand of hair floating out of my mother's bun.
"Do you remember Prince Nathaniel? He would make a great king, although you are free to pick your own. However, no humans! They are selfish and will do anything to get what they want!" My mother clenched her fist, and her eyes grew full of hatred.
There was once a human who used a trawler to attempt to catch the fishes in the city, but in my father's attempt to save the city from destruction, he himself got trapped in the net and was never seen again. "Alright, maman. No humans." I smile at her, and swim out of the room. It was time for me to look for my prince.
I swim around the city, looking for potential suitors. Nathaniel looked more than excited at the prospect of being my husband and I played along, hoping to not hurt his feelings, although I quickly excused myself and swam to the surface.
I finger my bracelet and stare longingly at the green jewel embedded in it. How I missed Adrien. He was the one I wanted to rule with, just that.... He was a human. And maman said no humans.
A lone figure walks along the sand, and picks up a pebble, flinging it across the water. I squint and swim closer to take a look. My tail accidentally slapped the water in my excitement and the figure turned.
I could see that it was a male by now and I hurriedly swam over, sure that it was Adrien. He removes his hood, and jumps into the water. We embrace, and I felt overjoyed. We were finally reunited after so many years! "I missed you so much, Marinette!" Adrien gasps as he catches his breath. "Me too!" I smile widely as I soaked in his embrace.
"I can't believe its you!" I grin, and I accidentally drag him deeper into the water. "Mari..." He struggles to breathe above the surface and I realise my mistake, dragging him back up. He smiles that adorable lopsided grin, before leaning closer.
"Marinette, you may not believe this, but I love you." He whispers into my ear, his warm breath tickling my skin. "I love you too.. Only... I can't." I sigh, and look Adrien in the eye. "I need to marry another mer soon. I really really want to marry you but I don't think you are a mer, Adrien. " His smile falters, and he rubs his neck. "O-oh. I see. Thanks for telling me." He climbs out of the water, and I see the devastation in his posture.
"I'll get going. See you here in a week?" He gives me a faint smile, before walking back to the human village. I rest on a boulder, pondering over whether love or my kingdom came first.
"Hey! Marinette!" I follow the familiar voice and see Adrien in the water. "Hey!" I swim over and hug him. Only, this time it feels different. Adrien whispers in my ear, "I exchanged my eye colour for the tail. And it was totally worth it to be with you." My head snaps up in surprise and I look at Adrien's lower body. (Quit the dirty thinking. Shh) Instead of his toned legs, there was a green mermaid's tail.
Adrien gently tilts my head up and puts his lips on mine. I let out a squeak of surprise but we intensified the kiss, his tongue licking my lower lip once in a while. "Adrien.. Will you marry me?" I smile widely, offering him the other bracelet, the one with the blue gem dangling from it. He accepts it and laughs. "Marinette.. isn't this the stone we skimmed a few years ago?" I grin at the memory. "Yes it is, Adrien."My smile drops as I realise that Adrien must have a family. "Adrien... What about your family? Won't they be worried?" I quietly ask him and he looks toward the seabed. "My dad committed suicide a few weeks ago. You know what happened to my mom... " He trails off, before taking my hand in his. "But it's okay, because I have you." I smile, and I pull him closer to me. "Kiss me, Adrien." He did. "That's a good kitty." He pretends to purr. "M'lady."
