CHAPTER 6

************************************

"I knew it! I knew it, I knew it, I knew it! Eeeeeeeekkk!" I jerk the phone away from my ear.

Goodness Claire, you are boy crazy!

"I told you so, remember? He likesss you." Claire tells me.

"Do you have to scream? My gosh, you're going to burst my ear drums!" I scold her. I'm lying on my bed in the dark.

"Sorry..." She replies sheepishly. "But now we both have a date to the festival! I can't help it that I'm so excited!"

I laugh, "Yeah. We'll have to get ready together."

We start talking about how we think the night will go. Most of it was unrealistic, like riding off on a unicorn in the sunset. But come on, a girl can dream!

We say goodnight and I turn over onto my back. I gaze at the glow-in-the-dark stars on my ceiling. I've had those for a long time, I'm glad I didn't throw them away before we moved. I like to look at them.

I try to fall asleep, but I can't. I toss and turn, get a glass of water, I even tried to count sheep! I got up to 100, but look at me. I'm still wide awake.

Whoever made up the "counting sheep" ordeal is a liar and a dumbo. I sigh and rub my eyes.

Come on Ev.. go to sleep...

I lay still with my eyes closed for ten more minutes.

That's right.. let your dreams catch you

But I'm not asleep yet. I snap my eyes open, this is pointless. I go down stairs to watch some tv and get a little snack.

I basically stayed up the whole night. Why I can't fall asleep? I have absolutely no idea. About an hour before I'm supposed to wake up I finally doze off.

*************************************

There's a tickle in my nose, what is that? Well it sure is annoying! I swat the air in front of my nose and feel something fuzzy. Blinking open my eyes, I see Maddie holding a feather in front of my face.

She looks like a deer in the head lights. Her eyes are wide and her mouth is shaped like an "o".

"Maddie!" I yell intimidatedly. I sit up and was about to grab her by the waist but she ran away. Since when did she receive cat-like reflexes? She dashed away as fast as a roadrunner!

I chase after her and she giggles as we run around the house.

I let her go ahead of me for the fun of it, but then easily catch up to her. I snatch her up and spin her around.

She screams and giggles as I get her dizzy. After feeling that I was also beginning to get dizzy I set her down. She walks in a zig zag line down the hallway. I cross my arms and watch her, feeling accomplished. I smile to myself and head up to my room to get ready for school. I wish I didn't have to go today, imagine how tired I am this morning! With only one hour of sleep and bags under my eyes, I head upstairs.

*************************************

"Hey, Evelyn? Can I talk to you?" I hear someone ask.

I spin around from my messy locker to see Mathew. "Of course! Just one sec." I put the rest of my textbooks away and slam my locker shut.

"Let's go." He takes my hand and pulls me outside by the little lake.

"What's going on?" I ask curiously and pull my sleeves over my hands. It's freezing outside, as always. I shuffle my feet in the sand.

"Well, I think you've noticed already.. but I have a girlfriend." He scratches his head. "But I never actually told you, and I'm sorry."

I nod slowly, not looking into his eyes. So he knew that I knew? But he still never brought it up..

"Except," he goes on. "I'm really not interested in her." he admits honestly. "She's not my type at all." He says and shrugs, I look up at him. He's standing a few feet away.

Wait what? Then why are they together? He sees my confusion and continues.

"This might take a lot of explaining. But it all ties into why the university got cancelled." He tells me.

This sparks my interest, I'm still super curious about that. Now I'm even more curious since Hannah is connected to it some how.

"Oh.. Well, um-" I start to say.

"And I think you really need to know." He interrupts and takes a step closer. "It'll be safer."

Safe? Was the university dangerous?

"No one's supposed to ever bring it up again. But I'm going to. So.. here it goes." He begins with a deep breathe. "When the college started everything was fine. It was popular, many people were attending, it had great reviews. But one of the professors was found to have been doing bad things.

"They found out his plans to wreck the university and hurt the students. There was much worse though, he was a very bad man. So they put him in jail and closed down the university." He furrows his eyebrows. "A while later the man escaped from prison. So you see, he's still out there. He's still seeking revenge." His tone rises. "He created a whole group of bad guys. That gang is killing people. They're gonna come back I know it! They'll come back here and destroy the place." His voice cracks. "They killed my dad." He whispers. "My mom was lucky enough to get away. She ran, with me as a baby in her arms." He shakes his head.

He walks slowly over to the lake and throws a rock. Hard. It goes far and I hear a faint splash as it breaks through the surface of the still water.

I hear him sigh, he looks down and kicks the sand. I walk up behind him and put a hand on his shoulder. I don't know what to say.

"You know what Hannah has to do with all this?" He chuckles menacingly. "I made a deal with them. One day I came across the group and they were on their way to Falcon High." He turns to look at me, my hand falls from his shoulder, back to my side. "To stop them I had to give Hannah what she wanted. She wants love. She wants someone to kiss and be with in public. I didn't tell you because.. because it hurts. I think, I think I have some feelings for you." He looks into my eyes. "I couldn't stand the thought of being with someone that's not you."

I notice that he's much closer now. His breathe fans my face. He takes his hand and cups my cheek. Once again I feel warmth coming from his touch. He starts to lean in, our lips getting closer centimeter by centimeter.

I quickly back away. This can't happen, could it? No, Lucas is taking me to the dance. But that doesn't mean he and I are together...

I notice the hurt look on Mathew's face.

"I'm sorry." I blurt out. "I just, I'm not ready for this. Sorry." I clear my throat awkwardly and hear the school bell ring. "Uh, thanks! By the way.. um, sorry. I better go. Talk to you later?" I ask hopefully while starting to walk backwards to the school.

Mathew regains his posture and erases his face of any emotion. "Yeah, I'll text you." He nods me off.

I give him a small smile and run up the damp, grassy hill.

Who knew the phrase 'saved by the bell' would ever come in handy?

************************************
