CHAPTER 2
************************************
"Do I have to go to school tomorrow? I mean we haven't even been in the new house for a full 24 hours yet!" I complain to Cary.
She's washing down the table as I clean the dishes.
"Yes, Evelyn, you do have to go to school tomorrow." She replies annoyedly. This is like the 10th time I've asked. I see why she's getting tired of saying the same response.
I get done with the dishes and turn around to lean up against the counter. Crossing my arms, I say, "but I still don't understand why?!"
Cary sighs as she walks to the sink with a dirty washcloth. Her footsteps sound loud in the silent house. She starts to rinse it off. I look out the windows into the dark night.
"Like I said Ev," she starts to say and glances at me, but then turns back to the running water. "You need education and what are you gonna do all day tomorrow? The house is pretty much all unpacked and everything was top shape when we got here. Nothin to do," she shakes her head, "so you're going to school."
She ends it like that as she pats the handle to turn off the water.
"But-"
"Nuh uh! No but's. You're goin." She commands, and I know she means it.
I just don't want to wake up early tomorrow and face my third year of highschool as the new girl. I won't know anyone!
I groan in defeat and pound my feet up the stairs. Slouching my body so my arms fall against each step.
I slip on sweatpants and a t-shirt and fall into bed.
My fluffy comforter and my fresh, soft, cool pillows let me sink deep into a relaxing sleep.

"Hey! Evelyn! Hurry! Wake up!" I feel someone shaking me urgently as they yell in my ear. How rude. "We all slept through our alarm clocks! You have ten minutes to get to school!"
Wait, what?
I sit up quickly and see Cary run out my bedroom door. I sleepily turn my eyes to look at my digital clock. I rub my palms into my eyes and squint to see the time. I only have 10 minutes to get ready for school...
I yawn heavily, groggily swinging my legs out of my warm... soft..... bed..
Okay! Gotta get up, don't get distracted! I race into my bathroom and scrub my teeth super fast. I run a brush through my hair and slip on some clothes. I swiftly apply some mascara and look at myself in the mirror.
Goodness I look like a mess. Whatever, it'll have to do.
I grab my bookbag off the floor and dash down the stairs. Grabbing some mini oranges I call out a quick goodbye and fly out the door.
My small Lexus beeps twice as I unlock it. I rapidly slide in and place my keys in the ignition. Once I turn them, I expect to hear the engine roar to life, but instead I hear a sound that worries me. The engine is struggling to make even a small noise.
I examine my gas meter and see that I'm on empty. What?! I raise my eyebrows in disbelief. This can't be happening. I quickly unplug the keys and shout Cary's name numerous times as I sprint back inside the house. I see her head appear at the top of the stairs
"Honey I thought you already left?" She asks me in confusion.
"My car doesn't have any gas! Can you drop me off at school? Then you can go straight to work!" I ask in hope, crossing my fingers.
