Fins

Okay... So I didn't think that through. He just looked so helpless, and usually that makes me happy, knowing I can cause pain and destruction. But this one was different. I had an urge, and it was burning inside of me. I had to save him. Even if it meant breaking the Law of Poseidon. Then the changes start.

Golden light erupts from his lips, spreading through his face, and eventually his entire body. My stomach is twisting and turning itself in and out of knots. All around me gold light blinds me, and for a second all I see is gold and white. There's a flash of red. And there it is. A bright, fiery red and orange tail next to mine. The boy chokes up water and gasps for air. He looks around. He looks down at his tail. Then at mine. I look into his copper hazel eyes, and he opens his mouth to scream. I quickly cover his mouth. His hand takes mine and kisses the back of it.

"Henry Gage, Miss..?"

I snatch my hand away, saying, "Myra Asrai. I promise I will explain. Wait.." I pause, realizing that he's oddly calm. "Why are you so calm, Mister Henry Gage? "

He simply states, "Because I know it's all a dream. Only a creature of such beauty and elegance can exist only in my wildest dreams." Ha! Elegance? Beauty? Is he mad?

I stare at him coldy. Like all the other men. Shallow and heartless, only caring about looks and my damned voice.

"Look, this isn't a dream. Now, you're going to dry out like that just sitting there. Follow me." I swim into the ocean. This should be interesting. But I'll have to admit, I feel sorta bad about giving him that look.

Henry appears beside me as I'm looking out into the depths of the Atlantic. I turn to him.

"Okay, so I know it's hard to believe for a human. And this is going faster then you or I probably expected, but I'm a Siren, and remember that voice that you heard? That was me, luring you and your little pirate, sailor, whatever, friends to their deaths. You were hardly breathing and didn't have a pulse so I decided to save you and turn you into a siren, even though it's against the rules, but I'll explain that later." I speak really quickly.

He just stares. I continue, "Well, now you're a Siren, and, er... yeah."

He looks at me. "Why are you upset at me, Miss Asrai?"

I snort under my breath. I glare daggers. "You're just like any other man that I've known or killed. Only caring about looks and my cursed voice. The reason that causes men to crash? Because of me. Because they see me, hear me, but they don't know what's coming." I snap.

He looks taken aback, but I hardly care. "Miss Asr-"

I interrupt him. Good gracious I'm moody today. I wonder why. "Please call me Myra."

He nods. "Myra.." He stretches my name out like it's a new concept. Which technically I am. "Myra, I'm not like that. I... Please give me another chance."

I look into those soft honey-brown eyes. "Fine. But only because I need to protect you."

He gives me a questioning look, and I explain why. "The reason being is that it's the biggest rule to not turn humans into a Siren." He nods. I cross my arms, thinking, while my braid floats aimlessly around my head.

I mumble some incoherent nonsense, and I say, "Alright. All I gotta do is either hide you, or make a backup story about you."

He lets me think, looking around, and breathing in the water, swishing his red-descended-into-orange tail.

I sigh. "Ugh! It's hopeless. We're gonna get found out. We're gonna die. Or worse! Sent to rot in prison!" I sink my face into my hands.

A soft voice that I recognize to be Henry's says, "Hey, you'll figure this out." Why is he so close?

I look up and arch an eyebrow. "And how? How am I supposed to? It's my fault. And unless you have an idea, I don't sea a way out of this."

He puts his hands on my shoulders. I glare down at his hands. "Look," he states. "Don't worry. You seem like a smart girl and we'll figure this out. As long as you don't slap me again." He winks.

I laugh and push him away. He laughs too.

"Look," I say. "It's getting late, and I can't go back to the Reef because they know me too well. I-"

I hear the conch. I grab his hand and go to the shipwreck that I just caused. Henry seems freaked out by all the dead bodies.

"What's the matter? What's going on?"

I say, "The King is coming around. I need you to hide here." I swim back out. Since I'm fifteen years old, every evening at 5 o'clock, I have to go to the surface with all the other older Sirens to sing our song to the King, who isn't there, but is. Since Henry's not a born Siren, he doesn't have the connection to Poseidon.

I hurry up to the surface and start singing when all the other Sirens do. No special lyrics, just a chorus of the most beautiful voices to tribute to our "Great King". Right. As soon as we're done, I hurry back to Henry.

"You good?" He asks. I nod and turn around to look at my surroundings.

He touches the scar on my back.

"What happened here?"

I laugh. It's about two and a half inches long. "Oh, that? I took on another Siren for his making fun of me. I won, of course, but it was kinda bloody." The look on his face is priceless. I laugh again. "Just kidding. I got too close to my.. uh... victims, and the debris of the wreck scratched me." He exhales. I laugh again. "So, Henry, how you liking your fins so far?" This time he laughs, looking down at his tail and fins.

"It's interesting, and honestly, I don't know why I'm not really shocked or scared. It just feels natural."

I laugh. "Guess you're made for the sea."

Henry pulls out two bed from the bunks, and I lay down looking up at the surface. The moon gleams onto the floorboards. I quickly fall asleep to end this crazy day. What am I going to do?
