A mask protects you. Defines you. But a mask only fools people on the outside. Pretending you're someone you're not changes you.
My whole life, I thought I knew who I was. A warrior, a protector of the weak, someone meant to do something incredible...
A/N: I really don't know who to choose guys! Should Delmira go to the mysterious vigilante who's been hurt too many times, or the man with a contagious smile and a heart of gold? Honestly, it's a drawl. Wally and Delmira have a light hearted relationship that just makes you giddy, but Nightwing and Delmira have a deeper understanding of their dark history and an unmeasured passion. So... who would you choose? Maybe this chapter will help you make a decision.
"All This Time" by OneRepublic. For Delmira and Wally. --- An obsidian javelin shot through the sullen sky, pushing its way through the clouds and towards Home Base. Inside were two heroes. One was at the helm, a look of determination in their eyes as they steered through the starless sky. The other stared earnestly outside the window, their eyebrows pulled so tightly together that a series of lines formed in between them. It was uncharacteristically quiet between the two heroes, even for a post-mission flight back.
"You're quiet. No quick quip about the mission?"
The only response was a mumble and a subtle shuffle of feet.
"Ah. Not even about getting my wings tangled and almost sailing into Kalibak. Twice?"
Still, the response remained an almost inexistent hum.
"Right," the pilot decided on, shifting the javelin into autopilot before making her way over to her companion. The other remained in his seat, only briefly sliding his eyes over to the approach before staring back out the window. He was leaning forward in his chair with his chin pressed into his palm, biting nervously at his lip. Loose skin peeled off the mangled and bloody tissue.
The pilot eased into the chair beside him and when he still did not respond, she pulled at the end of his chair and swiveled it so that he was forced to face her.
"Alright Flash. What's up?"
A gasp of surprise slipped through his pale lips. "N-nothing. Why do you ask?"
The winged warrior gave him an incredulous look and he sighed. Exasperated, Wally pulled down his cowl and ran his hands through his ruffled red hair. The torn tissue on his lip began to mend.
"Shayera."
"Is this about Fire? Because I could talk to her. Ask to go on the next mission with her and bring it up."
"What?" He asked, straightening up.
"Don't worry. I'll make sure it's casual..."
Wally stopped Shayera with a rapid wave of his hand. He hadn't talked to Fire in almost a year. It was surprising that Shayera still thought there was something between the two. But then again, Wally had always seemed like the biggest flirt before Fire had come along. Shayera probably just linked that to his involvement with the green haired Brazilian. But the relationship had never even taken off after that mission on Black Hawk Island.
"I haven't even talked to Beatriz in months."
"Then what's this about, Wally?" Shayera asked, her forest green eyes penetrating into his own. Wally felt like a sibling to her and not just because they looked similar in appearance. The speedster had been the first to accept her after she'd come back to the Justice League, even after the Thanagarian invasion, and not because he was the fastest man alive and he had to be the first. He had been hurt by her supposed betrayal, but he knew from experience that betrayal was never black and white. And, because of that, Shayera would protect him... at all costs.
