Piano
Apologies to Sharon Lask Munson
If she had continued her lessons
in the second grade
practiced everyday of third
picked for music school in fourth
she would have become well known
an amazing musician—
elegant but adventurous
She'd be playing more
in bigger and better places
New York City
New Orleans
She would be winning awards
maybe even an AMA
She would have dedicated fans
coming to see every show
buying all her music
worshipping her
She would have continued life great
well known
widely liked
living an extravagant life
filled with fancy cars and fancy houses
and men swooning at the very mention of her name
She would have never stopped to think
about what could have been
—
She never become well known
or known at all
Instead she continued her life
with no musical talent
she lived alone
with her dogs
cups of tea and walls lined with books
She wrote her heart out
but never shared her masterpieces
She lived the rest of her isolated life
wondering what could have been
constantly staring at her mothers old piano
mocking her—
the lonely keys
slowly drowning out her happiness
black and white
covered in distant memories of what could have been
