Silence lingers in the air, Taylor sitting just feet away from Ed. She’s planted on the floor, legs held close to her chest, chin rested on the top of her knees, staring at the hardwood floor.

His legs are in criss-cross formation, a guitar held in his hands. He strums mindlessly, waiting for Taylor to give him feedback on the song he’d just played her.

"Come on, couldn’t have been that bad?" He questions, stretching one leg out to nudge her toes.

Taylor draws her head back, smiling a little as she pushes his foot away from her. “It wasn’t bad.” She tells him, settling her chin back to its previous position, “I’m just…” she struggles to find the right word, evident in the way her eyes search the ceiling above them in thought, “Confused?”

Ed’s eyebrows raise up, and he sets the guitar down to an empty space on the floor next to him. “How so?” he asks, puzzled at what it is causing the perplexed look formed on her features.

Taylor’s nose scrunches to the side, thinking. “Well,” she begins, letting her legs fall down, stretching them out, her palms come to rest underneath her thighs, “You talk- you talk about finding new love,” Her hands fling up in the air in front of her, like the right words would somehow formulate in the air she’s holding, “but you have yet to move on from a past love.” She says, shifting her weight so she’s leaning back on her hands. She smirks, “How is that possible?”

Ed scratches the scruff lined along his jaw, looking her in the eyes, “It’s like- it’s like the sun. You cherish it every morning, appreciate it, embrace it. But you want the moon- because the moon is what brings the stars. You’re eager to see the sun in its fluorescence- but what you really long for, is to feel, the moon.”

Taylor bites her lower lip, analyzing his words. “So, in a sense, you’re trapped. I mean-” She scoots in closer, “You can’t escape the moon. The sun is only temporary happiness… like a distraction. But a really good distraction. Because you still bask in it, and enjoy it- but deep down inside… you’re waiting.” a wild smile forms upon her lips, “Waiting, for the moon.”

The corners of Ed’s mouth lift, because Taylor’s interpretation of it matches his to a tee, and it’s a constant effortless flow between the two. “Exactly.” he says, so quietly that it’s almost a whisper, “I’ve fallen for qualities of the sun, but I’m in love with every essence of the moon.”

Their eyes lock, and the tips of Taylor’s fingers trail over to his hand, drawing an innocent pattern over his pale knuckles, “Thanks for clearing that up for me.” She laughs, and in seconds she’s back on her feet, reaching out her hands, offering him assistance in getting up.

His hands latch onto hers briefly, until he’s standing up himself. Taylor’s elbow nudges his shoulder, “Come on, let’s eat dinner.” Her eyes find the window, “We can eat it outside, if you want.” She gives him a side glance, accompanied by a knowing smile, because the moon is at its peak, looming high above them, casting its shadow through curtains dancing with the wind.

Ed gives a boyish smile in response, chuckling at how dorky she is, skipping into the kitchen to prepare their food.

His feelings for Taylor haven’t faded completely, hasn’t even wavered as the time passes. She was his moon, her presence inevitable. But it was risky, to tell her how he truly felt, threatening to break the bond they’ve dedicated so much time in creating. It’s not as simple as the lyrics he writes, but not as chaotic as the emotions swirling around his head, that keep him up and constricted to ungodly hours of the night. But he’ll continue to follow her light, even if she remains oblivious to her own she shine.
