Ed takes another small sip from his drink before setting the glass aside. He’s been here for awhile, making small talk with others roaming about in the small cottage. There’s not too many people here, but enough to have the entire house buzzing with excitement and much noise, all within its walls preparing to embrace the new year.

It’s strange, he’s been here for at least an hour or two with no sign of Taylor yet. Although he has been able to spot and chat a little with her friends, he still had yet to greet the woman who threw this whole thing together. Every now and than while conversing with the other invites, he’d steal a few glances around the room, always looking out for her slim tall figure and short blonde hair. But as the hours began to pass by, still no sign of her remained.

He finally let his curiosity surface as he asked around, but nobody had a direct answer to give. Most of the answers he got went along the lines of, “She’s around here somewhere.” or “I saw her just a couple minutes ago, I don’t know where she went.”

Growing tired of the empty responses, he ventured out to the balcony to catch some air, to escape the crowd. Only a couple minutes until the new year and a majority of the guests were already drunk, causing more noise to consume the rooms of the house.

That’s when he sees her.

She is standing, tall figure bent slightly over the white railing, the moon casting her shadow. She’s looking out into the distance, her arms folded, head tilted ever so slightly. She’s wearing a mini red dress that outlines her petite frame perfectly. A small breeze passes by and she tugs a little tighter at the fabric keeping her shoulders warm.

The sound of creaking floor boards cause her to twist halfway around, and is pleased to find Ed join her as he takes in the view.

"I was beginning to worry." He says, and turns to face her. He’s standing next to her, hands tucked in the back of his pockets.

"Well well, look who dressed up for the occasion." says Taylor. Ed smiles, as he looks down at his plain t-shirt and jeans. But somehow her sarcasm comes off as charming.

"You really should be in there you know, loads of drunk people already yelling ‘Happy new year.’" He drapes his arms over the railing.

Taylor chuckles a little and refocuses her gaze out upon the endless hills.

Ed examines her face, he saw her only a couple weeks ago but somehow she’s managed to increase in beauty within the short time spent away from eachother. Standing in silence for a little while, the only noise that seems to accompany them is the gentle winter breeze followed by the sounds of leaves in bushes and trees shaking.

"Do me a favor?" Taylor asks in a whisper, she’s still facing the moon looming above them. Before Ed even has the chance to respond, Taylor finishes her question with a statement, "Be my New Year’s kiss."

"What?" Ed asks surprised, kissing Taylor at midnight was the last thing he would have suspected her to ask of him.

"Come on Ed." Taylor says playfully, she’s now facing him, "It’s… tradition." She says with a small smirk and a hint of flirtation in her words.

"You’re serious?" Ed asks, still unable to fully accept the simple request.

"Why?" Taylor asks questioningly, "Do you already have someone to kiss? Because if that’s the case than I’ll just-"

"No, no." Ed interrupts, "It’s just that…" he struggles to find the right words, and the new year is getting closer and closer within every passing second.

"Than what?" Taylor asks, inching a little closer, "It’s just a kiss. It’s not like we’re getting married." Taylor tries to ease the panic she sees running through Ed’s eyes, when all she feels is adrenaline coursing through her veins.

All of a sudden she hears the loud sound of people counting down,

10, 9…

"You sure?" Ed asks, there’s not enough time to explain to her the millions of ways this could end, good and bad.

8,7…

Taylor’s lips struggle to hold in her laugh, finding his nervousness adorable. She nods quickly and inches in even closer.

6,5…

"Ed," she starts, her arms making their way up towards and around his neck,

4,3,2…

"Just kiss me."

With that said, her lips are met by his and electricity immediately spurs throughout both their bodies, bodies which are now knit close together. He wraps his arms tightly around her waist and her fingers run through his red hair. Taylor is first pull away, her breathing a little shaky. But he’s still holding her, and her hands are still tangled in his hair. The excitement from the people inside is loud, but the beating of their hearts are even louder.

Their eyes meet, and for once in her life, she doesn’t feel anxious of what the new year might bring her. All she cares about is the person whose embrace she’s in right now, and the butterflies in her stomach are uncontrollable. The feeling is indescribable, all she manages to say is “Happy new year.” in a light whisper.

Ed smiles, “Happy new year.” He replies, and this time he means it.
