She could remember it. That one sentence that completely tumbled her world upside down. Replaying it in her head she decided it was the worst one could hear.

“Taylor, let me introduce you to Athina, my girlfriend. Athina, this is Taylor, my best friend.”

My best friend.

He’d sent her a FaceTime call and she’d accepted it, hoping to invite him to stay over at her’s for a few days until they both had to do other stuff. Maybe she could drop a few hints that she liked him or something. She’d seen his face on her iPad’s screen - and her face. She knew he’d say this because he’d never bring a girl into their friendship-time because it was theirs - and only theirs.

She’d told him basically she needed to go and made up the lame excuse Meredith was ill and she needed to be there for her. She could see his face change, his lips going downward, his eyebrows frowning but she didn’t care - she just wanted to escape. Escape the sorrow she hadn’t told him her feelings earlier, regretting that she encouraged him to get a girlfriend but most of all telling him she didn’t have feelings for him when they first toured and he told her he was in love with her. She’d turned him down and again and again and he’d gotten sick of it she knew and he’d sought a girl who did want him romantically. True, Taylor hadn’t had feelings in the beginning but after a month or two she started noticing little things like how he’d sneak looks at her, made up excuses to touch and hug her, how cute he was when he slept, how excited he got when building pillow forts and most of all how he lost himself in his music.

She regretted turning him down.

“I’ll talk to you later, Ed,” she squeaked out before turning down the call. Putting the device on her coffee table she stood up, barely holding her tears at bay and ran to her bedroom. Pushing her head into one of the countless pillows, her tears started streaming like a non- stopping waterfall, her sniffles loud and awkward. Meredith kept away and the sound of her phone rang but Taylor let it go, let everything and everyone go because that’s what she did - she messed up and screwed up no matter how much effort she put into it or how much she cared she pushed people and her emotions and everything else away.

She just wished she hadn’t screwed this up.

Oh how I wish I hadn’t let him go.
