---------------------------------------
after dinner and the teams laughing in the living area it came time for everyone on team voltrons favorite part of the day;
sleeping.

who could blame them really? training all the time, protecting planets, saving species, fighting galra? it's all so much on everyone. the person who really feels the most physical and mental strain of all of it is pidge.

maybe it's because they were born the latest and are just more caught up with how kids and teens are. the thing is that yeah pidge can do the work. they DO do the work. they're just a lot more aware of the strain than the others. they can lean up against a counter and feel their shoulders ache and go right back to work. but on top of all the work for a fourteen year old pidge doesn't really sleep much at all. they get around four hours of sleep a night. they spend a lot of time looking at space technology, reading altean books (even some fiction ones), and trying very horribly to learn the altean language.

moral of the story is, pidge puts in a lot of hard work and doesn't complain at all.

so when they're trying, for once, to go to their room to get some shut eye they don't expect a silent lance waiting at their door.

pidge wouldn't necessarily say it was an unpleasant surprise, but they were pretty pissed that they couldn't even get this much to themselves.

a quirky and clever comment was about to leave their mouth when they stopped after walking closer to a furrow-browed lance. lance, the teams player. lance, the all jokes and smiles boy from cuba. lance, the tallest and most confident of the teens, had never looked so small in his life.

not even just his presence was sad, his body language was too. his back was hunched over, curling his standing body into a sort of ball. his hands were intertwining and untwining themselves at the fingers near his waist. his arms and hands were shaking slightly and his hair was disheveled, framing his damp face.

pidge slowly approached lance but stopped when they realized that they looked like they were trying to approach a wild animal.

"hey lance. i haven't seen you since you snuck out of the living room earlier." lance had bid the others goodnight much earlier from when the others had retired to bed. something about "you don't just wake up looking this good" and "this boy's gotta get his beauty sleep."

lance was relatively silent until pidge was about to speak up again. "i'm sorry, i really did try to sleep but i had a nightmare." after that he couldn't look pidge in the eye.

pidge pondered for a moment and sighed. "let's talk about this inside bud." opening their door and allowing lance to step inside.

they both sat on the bed, a few inches between them.

pidge stared at the ground in thought until they said "why didn't you go to hunk? not that you're a burden to me or anything, it's just you've known hunk longer, wouldn't he be easier to talk to?" they said as gently as they could.

lance looked up from his hands and said "of course hunk's easy to talk to. he's my best friend. it's just well-" he repositioned himself to face pidge "-hunk's a great guy and all, but he isn't really good at understanding all of, this." he said while making circular hand motions.

"i don't know i just thought that, you're younger, and a very accepting person. i thought it'd be easier for you to understand what i'm, what i'm going through."

pidge nodded and said "if you want me to understand lance than you've got to tell me what's going on."

lance let out a heavy breath and said "i've always had nightmares. ever since i was a kid. i've got a big family pidge, so if anything bad ever happens with someone i'm living with somebody else in my family will take me in, that's how it's always been. i started getting nightmares when i was switching between homes in my family. a lot happened as a kid and i don't know they've just, stuck? anyways, they started getting more, um, vivid i think is the word." he said unsure.

"vivid?" pidge questioned. "yeah, like they weren't uh there when i first got here. i mean they were there, i had them. they just weren't as present in my life as they are now. they didn't hit me as hard and left me thinking about them as much as i do until now. it was like this when i was younger too."

"maybe coran has some sort of super alien medicine that will take away your nightmares." pidge said hopefully.

lance chuckled and said "yeah they had that on earth too and it knocked me out and took my dreams away altogether, no thanks."

pidge pursed their lips into a thin line for a few moments. "i'm really sorry lance, i wish i could help." pidge said sadly.

lance laughed a gentle but present laugh. "pidge you did just help me." he rubbed at his eyes as if he had laughed so hard he began to tear up. "thank you, for letting me speak."

pidge smiled and said "anytime lance, just maybe not when i'm trying to sleep." the two smiled at that last comment.

"goodnight pidge." "goodnight lance." the two said their goodbyes and parted their separate ways. as lance walked down the corridor to go back to his room his feet suddenly stopped at a metal door with a red circle in the middle.

"oh no," lance thought in his head "here we go i guess."
