In the early hours of Thursday morning I was rudely awoken by a strange occurrence. There was an annoying yet surprisingly pleasant sensation happening within my right ear. There was a loud ringing. A high-pitched beep. I felt it vibrating my eardrum, which was strange. Never before had something like this happened to me.

Minutes passed as I sat up straight in my bed, concentrating on the feeling of the vibrating eardrum and the sharp sound that those vibrations caused. I actually heard it. I heard the sound.

Overwhelmed, I slowly stood from the soft mattress and slipped my bare feet into my slippers. My Gryffindor jumper was hanging over one of the pipes near the fire in the middle of the room and I slowly pulled it on. The ringing didn't cease, it was just there. Vibrant and loud. Maybe Remus would know what was going on, because I didn't understand a bit of it.

I tiptoed out of the dorm, trying not to wake anybody and shut the door behind me as I stepped into the hallway. It was dark in the common room; the curtains were slightly ajar and they let in a brilliant stream of white moonlight. It must've been around two in the morning, and I considered going back to bed.

Maybe I shouldn't wake Remus, I could just tell him in the morning. He could use all the sleep he was getting, and then some. The last full moon hadn't been easy on him, despite the wolfsbane potion.

As I was about to head back to my dorm, a sharp pain slowly started to spread around my right ear. It was crawling down my ear canal and affected the entire right half of my face. I tried to get it to go away by moving my jaw around a little but it only seemed to make it worse. It was pounding and it was so incredibly intense that my eyes started to water in pain.

Okay well fuck that, I'm heading for the infirmary.

With my right hand held to my ear I headed for the portrait hole, the painting flew open as soon as it sensed my presence there.

The air in the hall was chilly compared to the warm atmosphere in the common room. Goosebumps formed on my skin as I quickly made my way down the flights of steps, and into the hallway leading to the infirmary. I was barely a quarter of the way into the corridor when the pain shot through to the other side of my face as well, making the moisture in my eyes trickle down my cheeks as I bit my lip harshly. It felt as if someone was running over my head with one of those muggle military tanks. My temples were pulsing, my right ear was ringing still. And to think I hadn't wanted it to stop before.

Before, I had wanted the sound to stay; I'd wanted it to get louder, but now.... Now I wanted it to go the fuck away and never come back.

Through my blurry vision, I saw a bulb of light appear around the corner of one of the connected halls.

Oh, great. Filch is going to come by and visit. Just awesome.

The old man hated all the students and he would surely want to get me into detention if he were to find me roaming the halls at this time of night, but I had no time to run and hide. I hadn't the strength for it either. Pressing my hand to my head I continued to apply pressure to my ear in hopes that it would at least help a little. I resumed my way to the infirmary slowly, not even bothered to try and get away from Filch. The light came closer to me, the owner of the wand approaching me slowly.

Never had I seen Filch with a wand before... Maybe it wasn't him?

We met one another in the middle of the corridor, where I found that it was in fact Remus that was patrolling tonight. He looked at me with a disappointed look on his face, a frown forming on his thin lips. I hated that look. My dad opened his mouth to speak, but stopped.

Another pulse of pain shot down my ear canal and I shut my eyes tightly. My left hand was balling up into a fist at my side and I really wanted to punch something. Never had I felt anything like this before. It hurt. A lot.

A hand rested gently on my shoulder and I forced myself to focus on it. I forced myself to feel each and every finger, to feel the warmth of the hand and I opened my eyes to look at Remus.

His lips moved, but I couldn't make out what he was saying, as the tears blurred my vision. He retracted his hand from my shoulder and started to move it in sync with his other one, signing out the words he spoke.

"Lex? Are you okay, Love? What's wrong darling?"

I pointed to my ear aggressively.

"It's hurting, Papa. I don't understand."

Remus' eyes looked into my own  with a sorry look. He raised his hand again and rested it on the side of my face, turning it to him so he could inspect the ear. Carefully I felt his hand touch my ear and earlobe before he gently turned my head to face him once more. A slight panicked look in his eyes as he attempted to keep a calm expression on his face.

"It's bleeding, Love. What have you done to it? Has anything happened to you that could've caused this?" He signed quickly.

It was bleeding? How had I not felt that? How hadn't I noticed it? I lifted my hand up to my face and found that there was indeed blood covering the palm of it. Oh dear.

"I don't know, Dad. Please it hurts really, really badly."

Remus nodded quickly and pressed his hand to my back, guiding me to the hospital wing.

Madame Pomfrey stuck her head out her bedroom door when Remus and I entered the infirmary, and quickly rushed towards us as she saw us. She was saying something but I couldn't be bothered to even try and understand a word of it as the pain in my ear only seemed to increase as time went by.

I was tired and I wanted the pain to be over. I wanted the ringing to go away, but mostly I just wanted to sleep. I was ushered to a bed and pushed onto the mattress. Madame Pomfrey had me sit on the edge of the bed as she inspected the ear carefully. Remus took my hand in his and gave it a reassuring squeeze. I gave the man a watery smile back, mentally thanking the heavens for the gift of a man.

The matron stood and hurried to one of her cabinets at the other side of the wing, a minute later she returned with a small cup of clear liquid. The plastic cup was handed to me and I looked to Remus.

"All in one go, Love. It'll help." He signed with a small smile on his face. And so I took a big gulp of the stuff, making sure to empty the cup entirely in just one go. It was bitter and at the same time it tasted like butter beer in some way.

"Now lie down, love." Remus signed again. I obliged, starting to feel a little light headed. Black spots started to further blur my sight before I closed my eyes and fell away from consciousness, still I felt the pain in my ear increase though. It took a minute for me to be completely out of it and when I was finally 'gone', I felt at peace at last.

No more ringing, no more pain. Just leave me here forever.
