Wands Away!

Mr. Ollivander looked at Eve carefully. "Ah, a young child ready to delve their mind into our world. Follow me, child; I need to measure you." He reached out and tapped his assistant on the head. "Grab the measurer, Henry, and help me onto that stool."

Eve stood back behind a few shelves, worried already. When she was with her parents, she was fine. But having a near complete stranger measure her was completely unnecessary. As she watched Henry help Mr. Ollivander onto a very precarious looking stool, the walls seemed to shake. A few particles of dust floated to the polished floor, making Mr. Erne pale beside his wife.

"What's h-happening?" He stammered, clutching at Mrs. Erne.

"I've no clue more than you, dear," Mrs. Erne replied, shifting her gaze warily to the shelves around them.

Aunt Grace, however, looked positively joyful. "Alice, don't be scared! It's the wands! I think one is going to pick little Evie!"

Mr. Ollivander poked his head up from a large bin he was shuffling through which Henry was holding and stuttered, "Wand...pick? My, only once have I ever.... once before, yes.... Henry, fetch the-"

But Eve never had a chance to figure out what Mr. Ollivander needed, for at that moment, there was a great crash and half the boxes stacked precariously on the shelf nearest Eve tumbled off, showering her heavily with dust. When it cleared, Eve stood upright and looked towards the shelf; sitting right in the middle was a small, bent up box. It looked like no one had wanted it. As a result, it had sat there for years, but now there was a small light emitting from it.

"Henry..." Mr. Ollivander whispered, eyes locked on the box, "get it down, please."

Henry nodded, pointed his own wand at the box, muttered, "Accio!" and then handed the beat-up old box to Eve. She took it wonderingly. Apparently this had only happened once before; but why her? Why was she so special? Wands normally had to be tested and tried, but her - the wand practically leapt at her.

Eve opened the box slowly. As she did, the light grew brighter until it almost burned her eyes. She took the wand out carefully; it was a dusted cream color, with a reddish undertone, and deep swirls in the handle. It was one of the most beautiful things she'd ever seen.

"That was one of the first wands I ever made," Mr. Olliavander said in awe. "Pine wood, phoenix feather core, 10 inches, unbendable. It suits you wonderfully, Eve."

Aunt Grace suddenly clapped her hands together excitedly. "Well, try it out, Evie!"

"What should I do?" Eve asked; she suddenly felt like this simple stick of wood was a ticking time bomb in her hands.

"A simple flick should do, dear." Aunt Grace said, demonstrating with her own wand and forcing a pile of dust into the shape of a rabbit, making it hop out the door. "See? Simple."

Eve obeyed and flicked the wand. A small shower of sparks danced from the tip of her new wand, flying towards the fallen boxes. In a few mere seconds, the pile sorted itself back onto the shelves with ease.

"A perfect match!" Henry exclaimed happily, but then winced when Mr. Ollivander raised a frail arm and rapped him on the head with a wand box, muttering something about "disobedient kids" and "no respect these days" as he shuffled back to his desk and settled into his chair for the checkout.

It wasn't until the sun had finally gone to sleep for the night, that the Erne family arrived home with Aunt Grace in tow, arms laden with books, school supplies, and Eve's new pet, a ferret.

"So, Mum, when is the first day of school? When do I actually go to Hogwarts?" Eve asked her mother during dinner.

Mrs. Erne finished scooping mashed potatoes into her plate and sat down in thought. "I believe your term begins September first,"

"That's in one week! I should start packing." And with that, Eve wolfed down her dinner, grabbed her ferret's cage, and raced upstairs to her bedroom to begin her preparations for her new school.
