Ethan sat in Grayson's car, he hadn't spoken a word since Alex told him what happened. He felt Grayson's thumb running over his knuckles, in what he guessed was to soothe him, but it was being frantically done, too fast paced to actually ease him.
Grayson thought he was going to snap the steering wheel with his other hand while he drove. He glanced in the rearview mirror, he saw that Alex had a blank expression on his face as he stared out the back-passenger window; he only saw grief in his eyes.
"I'm taking you both home," Grayson broke the silence. "I'll be investigating the whereabouts of Nathaniel and William."
"What about my friends?" Ethan asked, his voice was so quiet that he barely spoke. "Can they be...saved?"
"Their bodies were drained," Alex's hollow voice came from behind Ethan. "There's nothing to be done."
Ethan swallowed back a sob, his eyes burned, but no tears came. He kept tight-lipped and nodded at that information, as he knew he'd lose control of himself if he dwelled any longer.
"William said that this was a gift for you," Alex continued on. "For the both of you, to have Ethan come back to his roots and to hurt Grayson; William took Nate to mock you, Grayson, Nate was the last to be turned by you in a long time, he knew that, and he knew it would hurt you."
Grayson shakily exhaled; the wheel cracked faintly.
Ethan turned his head to gaze out the passenger window; he had taken his hand back and his hands were fists in his lap, "William will never change," he whispered. "An unpunished brat, but knows that he can get away with it."
"He's not," Grayson harshly answered. "You can't protect him, therefore, he's perfectly vulnerable."
Ethan whipped his head towards Grayson and opened his mouth to rebuttal against that statement, but stopped himself; his beloved spoke the truth. He looked down at his clenched hands, "I understand."
"When I break the seal and you've recovered and I'm out hunting William down, do not interfere, Ethan," Grayson's voice was cold. "I will kill him, even if I have to go through you first."
Alex thought he had turned into stone to hear Grayson openly threat Ethan.
Ethan wasn't scared at that statement, as he hadn't planned on doing it in the first place, "Bring him to me, I want to watch him die by your hand, to suffer in silence as I won't save him, as he's made everyone around me do the same. I had been powerless to protect the ones I cherished and when I do regain my status, I won't stand in your way when you take his life."
"Even though I want nothing more than to see William die, how can you watch your first fledgling be slaughtered?" Alex asked quietly. "I thought there's an instinct to do everything within your power to protect the ones you change, even if you have to fight your entitled mate."
"Because of that," Ethan answered, "Grayson is my entitled mate; I won't disagree with his choices, when he's being threatened. I love William in a way, but not how I love Grayson. I love William as he's my first fledgling, my first project...but I cannot love him intimately, as he loves me; he acts out in jealousy and because of those actions, I can no longer turn a blind eye to all the damage he has caused."
"You truly have changed," Alex was in awe. "Even with your mortality, I had feared you, as you have an underlining of power that humans do not possess. You were never swayed with threats that I said to you, but rather challenged them; you're challenging the biggest threat now."
